At the beginning of the game, Dunhill will tell you that the animal shipper is out of town. He returns on Spring 9 to give you a free cow for your farm. After that, Neil will set up his shop in the Town Plaza area. Neil will sell animals for your farm, items needed to care for animals, impregnations, and trips to the Animal Sanctuary (i.e., Animal Land). Neil will announce his shop is open with a cut scene at 10:00 am if you are in the Village area. If the cut scene is annoying, you can avoid it by not being in the Village area between 10:00 am and 10:10 am. There is also a shop closing scene between 6:00 pm and 6:10 pm.

Although you can move Neil's personal house by editing your town layout, you can't change where the Town Plaza is. Neil's shop will always be located in the corner of the Village.

Items

You must buy Chicken Feed for your Chickens from Neil. There isn't a way to make Chicken Feed. Fodder can be made by cutting grown Grass with your Sickle.

You can also simply craft a Brush, Milker, or Clippers with your workshop and not buy extras from Neil.

Animals

The Cow and Jersey Cow come in two styles at his shop. The style is just graphical and doesn't affect the animal. The styles appear randomly in his inventory. The third style of Cow is the old-style bubble cow that you can receive as a prize for winning the Cow Festival. Neil will never sell the bubble cow style at his shop. Bubble cow births do not count towards unlocking the Jersey cow before Fall of year 2.

Even though Neil sells Chickens at the beginning of the game, you can't buy one until Rebecca moves in and you buy the blueprint for the Coop from her. Once you build and set a Coop on your farm, Neil will let you buy Chickens.

An alternative way to unlocking Silkie Chickens is to use the Wifi trading system to receive a Silkie Egg from another player. Then hatch the Silkie Egg in your Coop to receive a Silkie Chick.

Impregnate Animal

All of the animals at Neil's shop are adult-sized. If you want to save some money, you can ask him to impregnate one of your adult animals so it will have a baby. The animal pregnancy will last 20 days. Making an animal pregnant doesn't cost any money, but it does prevent the animal from producing any goods for sale until the 20 days are over. You can't impregnate Llamas or Yaks.

Animals that are pregnant can't be brushed, taken outside, or fed. It won't even get sick! After 20 days of sitting inside the barn, Neil will stop by your house in the morning to announce the birth. The baby animal will have half the heart level of its mother.

Chickens do not need a helping hand from Neil. Simply place an Egg into the nesting box inside the chickens' barn. The egg will hatch 7 days later, and the Chick's friendship level will be based on the Star Rank of the Egg it hatched from. The maximum number of hearts a new Chick can have is 5.

Animal Sanctuary

screen shot

One of Neil's services is the Animal Sanctuary. It is a special pasture where your selected animals can go to relieve stress. It may be fun for them, but you are stuck there until you ask Neil to take you home. There is nothing for you to do at the sanctuary pasture. A trip to the Animal Sanctuary will cost 100 G per livestock animal, and you can take a maximum of 25 animals. You can't take chickens to the sanctuary, nor can you take sick animals, pregnant animals, or baby animals.

Visiting the sanctuary will be the only thing you can do for the rest of the day. You will be sent to bed when you return to the village. The sanctuary automatically closes at 9:00 pm.

Animals that visit the Animal Sanctuary will have their stress reset to 0 and won't need to be fed for the rest of the day. It doesn't increase friendship points, but it does impact the quality of the animals' products. You can have your animals produce great-quality items if they spend 50 hours wandering around the Animal Sanctuary. The game won't notify you when you've met that requirement; you'll find out when you harvest a product from the animal and it is visually different. It will also be titled "great," such as Great Milk, Great Wool, and so on. Great products processed with the maker machines will retain their "great" quality.
