Winter Festivals

There are 9 days to celebrate during Winter:

Pet Festival - Winter 10

You don't have to enter an animal the day before the festival like in past versions of Harvest Moon. Instead, go to the plaza between 12:00 pm and 5:00 pm to talk to Felix. You can then choose the pet you want to participate. The category will change every other year; year 1 is for your dog(s), year 2 is for cats, year 3 is back to dogs, and so on.

To win the festival, your pet will have to move across the plaza and meet you on the other side. The pet that reaches its owner the fastest will be the winner. There isn't anything you can do to encourage your animal; you can only sit back and watch to see if your dog or cat will be the fastest. You will be competing against two random non-important people from other villagers.

Just for participating in the festival, you will earn +500 FP with the villagers in attendance

The method to winning is the same for the Animal Festival or the Pet Festival. The more hearts your animals or pet has, the better the chance it will be the fastest one across the plaza.

The starting point

At the beginning of the race, your animal will indicate how fast it is going to start out:

  • Heart - will start out walking fast
  • Music note - will start out somewhat fast
  • Grouchy - will walk slow
  • Annoyed - will walk slowest

The chances that your animal will start out with a heart bubble increases with the number of hearts it has. If you enter an animal with at least 6 hearts, you have a 90% chance (or higher) starting out with the ideal heart-bubble. An animal with 5 hearts only has a 50% chance of getting a heart, but does have a 40% chance of having a music note. With 4 hearts the odds are for a starting music note (and only a 25% chance of heart), and with 3 or less you're most likely to get the slow movement indicators.

As your animal walks towards you, its speed will decrease; a heart will lower to a music note, then to a grouchy bubble, and finally an annoyed mark. After annoyed, there are more indicators:

  • Exclamation - the "Dash powers, enable!" mark
  • Sweat - "Dash powers, activated! Zoom!"
  • Grouchy - failed, walk slow again...

The Exclamation appears after Annoyed, and your animal will either make a mad-dash to try and race past its competitors, or it will fail to dash and return to Grouchy. It then has to get through Annoyed again before it can activate the Exclamation.

Even with a low-heart animal, you still have a chance of winning an Animal or Pet festival. It's all based on luck. You don't have any control over how the results are going to turn out.

Also, there is a 10% chance that you will start out with the Confused marker, no matter how many hearts your animal has. If it is confused, there is a higher chance that it will reach Exclamation mode.

Winter Thanksgiving - Winter 14

This fesival will vary depending on what gender you're playing as:

If you are a girl...

During this day, you want to give Chocolate Cake, Chocolate Cookies, or a Choco. Party Cake to the bachelors. You will earn +1000 FP for each boy you give a chocolate treat to.

You can make the 3 types of gifts yourself, or you can buy them if the opportunity presents itself:

If you are a boy...

Winter Thanksgiving for boys

On this day, you'll receive gifts from the bachelorettes. At different times of the day, enter your farm house to have a visitor follow you inside. Depending on your affection with the person, you will get different gifts. You will get Cookies if you have a black, purple, or blue heart color, Chocolate Cookies at a green or yellow heart color, and Chocolate Cake at an orange or red heart color. The person will also earn +500 FP for giving you a gift.

Emiko does not participate in the Winter Thanksgiving festival.

If you are a boy and married...

When you awake in the morning, your wife will give you a present. If she has less than a red heart color (less than 60,000 FP) then you will be given Chocolate Cake. If she has a red heart color (60,000 FP or more) then you will get a Choco. Party Cake instead. You will also earn +1000 FP with your spouse.

Snowboard Contest - Winter 20

Snowboard Festival

You will receive a Snowboard from Felix on the 2nd of Winter in your first year. You can practice with it for the festival on the 20th. You can't buy the Skateboard from the bazaar unless you have the Snowboard in your rucksack at the start of the bazaar.

Talk to Felix at the plaza to start the festival. He will start the festival and tell you which of the two snowboard courses is going to be used; the beginner course or the advanced course. The participant with the fastest successful finishing time will be the winner.

After going down the snowboard course and achiveing a time, it will be judged against the two other participants. You must get a time faster than 5 seconds to win for the short course, and a time faster than 6 seconds to win for the long course. If you are the winner you will be given a Sandrose, regardless of which course the festival was using.

Starry Night - Winter 23 and 24

To participate in this festival, you must prepare for it on the 23rd. On the evening of the 24th, you can get together with your favorite marriage candidate to have a special meal.

To invite someone to Starry Night, the person must have a blue (20,000 FP) or higher heart color. On the 23rd, ask the person between 6:00 am and 5:00 pm. If he or she accepts your invitation, you will be told where to go on the 24th:

Emiko does not participate in the Starry Night festival if you are single.

The Starry Night party

Go to the party location between 8:00 pm and 12:00 am (midnight). All of the participants will gather together to celebrate the event. After it is over, you will be taken back outside. If you are playing as a girl, you will get an escort back to your farm house, but if you're playing as a boy you'll have to walk home alone.

After the party, you will return to your farm house and go to bed. You will earn a bonus +1000 FP with the marriage candidate you invited, and +500 FP for each of the other villagers or candidates that were at the party.

If you are married...

You will celebrate Starry Night on the 24th when you go into your farm house after 8:00 pm. You don't have to do anything on the 23rd, but your spouse needs to have a yellow heart color (40,000 FP) or more. You will be served a special dinner by your spouse, and earn +1000 FP with him/her and your child (if you happen to have one at the time).

New Years Eve - Winter 31

New Years Eve

This evening is set aside to celebrate the year's past accomplishments and look ahead to the new year. Most of the villagers will gather together, but not all of them. The children (Kevin, Cindy, and Lauren) will not be there because it is past their bed time.

Talk to Felix between 8:00 pm and 12:00 am (midnight) to start the festival. You will all count down to the new year, and then have a nice meal.

After the festival is over, you will earn +500 FP with all of the people who were there.
