You must have a kitchen. The recipe you choose must provide a high level of stamina and fullness.

Look at the recipes in your recipe book and check the cooking degree level and stamina/fullness levels for those recipes in the cookbook on the index page of this forum. Next check the inventory of your items available for cooking and you should have the one or two recipes you can make in the first year at your cooking degree level. Pick the best one (highest stamina and fullness level) and enter it.

I couldn't afford the kitchen prior to the Year 1 Cooking Festival so I couldn't enter.

You're right, Veggie. I remembered that that were recipes at the end of the line that needed less points to be successfull. I got confused and thought it was the black book. That's what happens when you post this kinds of things without checking before :P

Actually, if the Index is correct, the Black Book needs the most Cooking Degree points. I find that weird since the different colored books and wonderfuls all need a Black Book to complete yet the Black Book needs 70,000 points, the colored books need 60,000 points and the wonderfuls need 40,000. How do you know if you can make those lesser point items at those point levels if you can't make one of the ingredients until you've reached 70,000 points?

Sorry, but that has bugged me for a while now.

I completely agree with Veggie Angel, always save before cooking. And it's not about how complicated the recipe for the black book is, this is a really expensive one. But, if you managed to get all the recipes for the black book you probably won't fail to cook it, since (if I'm not mistaken), you need less Cooking Points for it than for some of it's recipes. I always save before anyway, but never got a failed dish in this case.

And for failed dishes, you can always use weeds :P

You should think before just storing a failed dish though or using it for an ingredient to get a new recipe.

Here is an example:

If you make successfully make Elli Leaves, Chazuke, Yggdra Soup, Poseidon Bowl and Sweet and Sunny you have all the ingredients for the Black Book. If you get a failed dish when you try to make a Black Book because your cooking degree is not high enough and do not reload or did not save just before you tried to make the Black Book, you will have used 90 ingredients (some of which are rare like rice candy, bottle, fish fossil and white herb) to make one failed dish which you could have made with one weed or one black herb.

It is a good practice to save before you make a new recipe. Especially if you know it has a high cooking degree point level.

And if you want to cook all the dishes, keep all of them for future cooking. Except for the ones you're going to give to Nick and Haila for recipes, of course.

It is better to plan to make a failed dish though.

You can exchange a weed for an ingredient in a single item recipe or use a black herb alone in herb salad or soup and make a cheap failed dish to use in recipe instead of an ingredient which could be shipped for more money as a whole ingredient or given as a gift some villager loves.

Alas, no one likes failed dishes or junk ore as a gift.

This degree system works for many things in this game, like fishing and mining, for example. Everything is difficult in the beginning, but as you get experience, it will only get easier.

Save before cooking or trying to get a recipe at the Diner or the Cafe and you can reload the game if the recipe fails. You will not have wasted ingredients if you do this.

Bread is 501 Cooking Degree points and that's why you are getting failed dishes.
