righty ho! firstly you can only give one treat per day to an animal, so if the chicken needs 2 regular treats, then it would take 2 days to give it those
also each animal type requires a certain combination of treats before it will start to produce more products. So again your chicken needs 2 regular treats, 15 veggie treats, 4 grain treats and 10 nutra treats just to get it to produce 2 eggs each day. However different animals require different numbers of all 4 treats, so a silkie chicken wouldn't produce more eggs from the same combo as a regular chicken. The same goes for both types of cows and sheep. Alpacas are a bit different though.
To get your chicken up to producing 5 eggs a day, you'd need to give it the same combination 3 more times (if it's producing 2 eggs a day, you would give the same combination 4 times in total if it's only producing 1 egg per day).
Since your game doesn't show you a list of how many treats you have given so far, you should keep a list yourself. However it does remember all the treats you give, so if you didn't want to have to repeat the same combination of treats each time your chicken produces more eggs, you can give it 8 regular treats, 60 veggie treats, 16 grain treats and 40 nutra treats and your chicken will then produce 5 eggs!
I hope that helped, if I've just gone and confused you more, let me know and I'll try to explain better ^^;
