There's http://harvestmoon.wikia.com/wiki/Bug_Hunting_%28TV%29 for basic information, but quite a few people have had trouble locating critters even so. Much like the original fishing guide, I thought it might be nice to have a critter guide thread where people can post things such as weather, time of day, specific location, etc. So to start:

Grasshopper
Found all year around, after you (or your horse) run through the area.

Spoiler:
Ant Hill Cricket (red)
Fall 3, 6:30pm. Sunny. Blue-High, near the tree on the island between the bridges. (I have also found this one in the center of the walking path on previous occasions). Possibly does not show up until year 2.

Cornered Cricket (red)
Spring 2, noon & 4:39pm. Sunny. Kono-High, on the right side of the screen in the main walking path.

Cricket (brown)
Spring 4, 11:36am. Sunny. Kono-High near the bottom of the slide.
Fall, various times and weather. Blue-High, center of the walking path.

Dirt Grasshopper (brown)
Spring 2, 12:53pm. Sunny. Kono-Low, in the middle of the screen on the walking path.

Emma Field Cricket (brown)
Fall 3, 6:35pm. Sunny. Blue-High, near the big rock on the bottom left side of the screen (after catching a Kutsawa Katydid in the same location, then exiting and re-entering). Possibly does not show up until year 2.

Hira Grasshopper (brown)
Spring 6, 11:1am. Sunny. Blue-High, near the fish pond.

Kobane Grasshopper (green)
Spring 2, 11:13am & 8:11pm. Sunny. Blue-High on the first terrace that leads down to the fishing pond.

Kutsuwa Katydid (green)
Spring 3, 10:55am. Rainy. Kono-High, just before the slide.
Fall 3, 6:20pm. Sunny. Blue-High, near the big rock at the bottom left of the screen.

Longheaded Locust (green)
Spring 2, 7:35pm. Sunny. Blue-Low, upper left of screen near wall forage spot.
Spring 3, 10:24am. Rainy. Blue-High, first terrace leading down to pond fishing spot.
Fall 4, 12:30pm (and other times). Kono-High, right side of the walking path.

Migratory Locust (green)
Fall 4, 12:33pm. Sunny. Kono-High, center of walking path after catching Longheaded Locust and exiting and re-entering. Possibly does not show up until year 2.

Piggyback Locust (green)
Spring 2, 10:10am. Sunny. Blue-Mid on the first terrace after jumping up on the mushroom.

Fish are already up on Cher's site (http://www.fogu.com/hm10 and then follow the fishing link) so there's no need for another guide for them (though we did have one back before Cher got hers up). Just use Cher's guide for fish, and swap the locations in Konohana Mid-Mountain. (So if her guide says you'll find a fish fossil at the Kono-Mid-Waterfall location, actually go fish at the Kono-Mid-Stream dock, and vice versa) All the other locations are good, as far as I know.

As Blue said, the fish have been done & that's what gave me the idea to do this one as a matter of fact.

Updated to add more grasshoppers and butterflies, and to re-do the formatting to make it easier to follow.

All of the frogs are up. Also got all but two dragonflies added.

I'm still missing the following, but from previous games I know partially where they can be found:

*Emma Field Cricket (green) - Blue-High, along the bottom left side of the screen where the big rocks block the field.

*Ant Hill Cricket (red) - Blue-High, center of walking path.

*Migratory Locust

*Emperor Firefly

*Mustache Firefly - Kono-Low, on the island in the stream or on the first ledge that leads up to the zip line.

*Ancient Dragonfly (yellow) - Blue-Low, near the stream.

*Crimson Dragonfly (red) - Blue-High, center of the walking path.

Bah, bugs.

I can only catch the ones that don't move and are sitting on the ground...like fireflies. Jumping up and down and chasing butterflies that disappear in the trees just kills me. My girl is SUCH a klutzdork. Can't catch 'em all.

I like to chase and catch them, but I think that butterflies disappeareance is terrible. You have a few seconds to catch them, that's why I was so happy I caught the helena morpho. And I'm still missing 3...

I now have all of the butterflies. They can be found at other times/in other weather as well, I've just been noting where I've found them personally (and I haven't been writing everything down tbh).

I've come to several conclusions based on my critter-catching experience.

*The main ones that seem to be affected by weather are the frogs which will show up when rainy (full or half day). No insects seem to show up on blizzard days, not sure about typhoons but probably not then either.

*Unlike villagers, bugs don't seem to care about festivals so you should be able to find them like normal.

*Catching beetles/cicadas is much easier if you're walking, rather than running. Conversely, you have to be running to catch dragonflies (jumping like a maniac helps too). Dragonflies don't seem to disappear from the screen, so if you have the time and patience, you can chase one all over til you catch it.

*I've long thought that in order to catch some of the harder-to-find bugs, you first had to go catch all of the critters on that screen, then exit and return before the 4-hour re-spawn window. I've now discovered this is only partially true.

To catch rarer bugs (i.e., Oki Butterfly, White Morpho, etc.): you must first catch the commoner insect that has the same color and resides on that screen. So, if you want a yellow Oki Butterfly - go to Bluebell-Mid and catch the yellow Swallowtail that likes to hang out by the forage log. Then exit the screen and come right back in. The Oki butterfly will now be somewhere around - usually on the left side of the screen by the ledges, or on the top right, above the Oracle's house. If you don't see it, exit and re-enter again and it should show up. This works for the White Morpho as well (catch the Small White first) and the Helena Morpho (catch the Purple Brush-foot).

I haven't tested this for insects other than butterflies yet, but I suspect it works the same way for dragonflies, etc.

*I should also note that I do not think what year you are in matters. I caught a Helena Morpho at the end of Spring, year 1.

Now I'm missing only the purple brush-foot to complete the butterflies. Is it true it's more common that the helena morpho? I got another HM today, but I couldn't find/catch the purple brush-foot yet. And I try to get everything, btw.

Hmm, that's interesting. In my game, the Helena Morpho has only shown up after I've caught the Purple Brush-foot ("PBF"). The PBF usually is floating around the lower half of the screen, either over by the forage stump, or sometimes over the river, while the Helena likes to hang out on the walking path above.

What time of day are you looking? I'm usually grabbing them around noon/1pm or so.

I'm wondering if the chances that a particular critter is there is based on a percentage rate. Maybe there is something like a 70% chance that you get the PBF (meaning 30% chance of Helena), but once you've caught the PBF, the odds of finding the Helena go up because there's no longer a random choice available.

Edit: also, you're welcome Clove! I found it frustrating to only be able to vaguely remember where I had found a particular insect before (especially under the time pressures of a request deadline!), so thought this would help people at least narrow down the location to search.
