Spoiler:
Hello everyone! I'm new in he forums but I've played Harvest Moon for quite some time (from HM2 running from a floppy disk since I had no GameBoy Y_Y). So, the thing is that I've been unemployed for a couple days now and since I need to wait a couple more days for some job interviews I've been enjoying my free time as you have no idea; I was playing HM - Grand Bazaar until this afternoon when I got HM - TToTT running on my DS (quite disencouraging since I already had my own-made-Excel'07 FAQ of Grand Bazaar but oh well).

So, eventually I came across the question everybody asks about fertilizer, how long does that thing last? because the FOGU FAQ only says the way they work. I started surfing the forums and earching answers and I came across a lot of people with the same doubt but not many clear answers; so, since I had nohing better to do, I decided I would test it.

I spent the last 3 hours (now almost 4) testing some things that came across my mind about fertilizers and discovered some interesting facts. Right before writting this I thought (kinda stupid not having thought it earlier) "let's check the dates of those questions!" and of course I found out most of them were like a month ago, meaning that probably all of you already now everything I'm gonna say. But since I don't want to feel like I wasted my, by now, not-so-precious time, I'm still posting this; maybe there's still someone who has this doubts and I can be somewhat helpful.

Since I needed the fertilizers and some other items I used some AR Codes :3

Without further ado, here you go.

Conclusions

  • Any Fertilizer will have effect only on the 8 surrounding crops/soil it if it's placed all by itself (aka not in a furrow). Doesn't matter if an adyacent crop is part of a furrow, the rest of the furrow will not recieve the benefit. Image below explains better:
    Image
  • Any Fertilizer placed in a furrow will ONLY have effect in that furrow, regardless of existing adyacent crops/soil. Also, it doesn't matter the size of the furrow, as long as the fertilizer is placed INSIDE it, it will affect all the furrow. Image below explains better:
    Image
  • Regular Fertilizer lasts 100 doses.
  • Water Fertilizer lasts 100 doses (still something funny happened).
  • Water Fertilizer is not used if it's a Rainy morning.
  • Water Fertilizer is used even if the weather changes to Rainy during the day.
  • Water Fertilizer uses as many doses as needed to water all the available spaces regardless the existance of a crop.
  • Speed Fertilizer was not tested, I was tired <>,...,<>
  • Bounty Fertilizer either haha.
  • Mature crops (when they're ready to be harvested) will NOT wilt/rot/lose freshness/etc no matter how many days they remain unharvested (at least until the season changes).
  • Mature crops DO NOT get Star Points from Regular Fertilizer, once they're ready to be havested their Star Rank will not change even if they're left with Fertilizers.

Procedure

First of all AR codes were needed in order to get the items since it was a new game, so it was made like this:

  • Always Sunny/Rainy Code to avoid/cause Rainy mornings and mid-day weather changes, watered crops needed to be controled.
  • Since Cucumber Seeds are available until Year 2 or 3, an Item Mod Code was used to turn Turnip Seeds from the Seed Shop into Cucumber Seeds. I was planning to used them in fertilizing test for Star Rank so I wanted to have the same SR as a store seed but eventually didn't come handy.
  • AR Codes to get the Fertilizers.

Using Konohara's Farm and the initial crop field, the space was arrange like this:
Image
(A)
Green Cells: Unused space.
Blue Cells: Fertilizing Test, a farrow of 10 Fertilizers ending with 2 Turnips.
Light Orange Cells: Capacity Test, a farrow of 20 Cucumbers with a Water Fertilizer and a Regular Fertilizer on each edge.
(B)
The way the farrows were going to be soiled.

Once the space was arranged, the soil was prepared, having this as the result:
Image

Testing

Fertilizing Test
Each Turnip was watered once a day since Sping 7th until they were both mature. On Spring 12th both of them were mature, so 1 Turnip was harvested.
Turnip 1: 1.5 Star Rank | 350 G when sold

The other Turnip remained there until Spring 31st (along with all the Fertilizer doing their job), when it was harvested the result was:
Turnip 2: 1.5 Star Rank | 350 G when sold

There was no change from Spring 12th to Spring 31st even with the fertilizers, conclusion is Mature Crops do not get SR points when left unharvested.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Capacity Test
This was kinda funny, with 20 crops bleeding all the life out of the Fertilizers it was fast.

Spring 7th - Starting.
Spring 8th - It is quiet...too quiet, do a barrel roll! (auto-troll ftw :3)
Spring 9th - Water Fertilizer is around 50% (sprite changes to a half-full bottle) but Regular Fertilizer remains full (like a boss-tilizer).
Spring 10th - Here comes the funny part; Water Fertilizer is around 30% but it doesn't seem to water any crops, all the furrow is dry; STILL, the blue animation part of the Water Fertilizer is still showing up, although, not all 20 crops get the animation, only 16 of them (o.O). Regular Fertilizer is now around 50% and keeps fertilizing all 20 crops (as the animation shows).
Spring 11th - Once again, all the furrow is dry but the animation of the Water Fertilizer is shown on 16 out of the 20 total crops. Regular Fertilizer now shows the 30% sprite but sill fertilizes all 20 crops.
Spring 12th - The Water Fertilizer is gone, ALL the crops are white (meaning the were not watered), all the furrow is dry except the 16 crops that had the animation the past two days, those 16 crops were watered today. The Regular Fertilizer is still there but no animation is shown in any crop.
Spring 13th - The 16 crops that had the animation and were watered the day before are now normal again (not white) but the rest wilted. The Regular Fertilizer is gone for good.

Image from Spring 12th:
Image

Conclusion is that Fertilizers go wild some times, need another test.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Capacity Test 2
A new furrow was made, this time the Fertilizers were put together in the begining to be able to manipulate the number of crops draining doses everyday.
Image

Now rules had changed, it all seemed that Fertilizers had a 100 dose capacity so, in order to test that, the crops needed to be reduced as time went by.

Spring 13th - Starting, 20 doses used.
Spring 14th - 40 doses used.
Spring 15th - 60 doses used (20 per day so far).
Spring 16th - Half the crops gone (20-10), now the daily dose is 10. 70 doses used so far.
Spring 17th - 80 doses used so far.
Spring 18th - 90 doses used so far. Fertilizers have not shown any irregularities.
Spring 19th - 100 doses used so far, still good, all the crops are watered and the animations for all 10 crops are shown.
Spring 20th - Both Fertilizers are still there but the furrow is dry, not even the Regular Fertilizer animation (green) is shown.
Spring 21st - Both Fertilizers are gone, furrow is dry.

Conclusion is that the Fertilizer dose capacity is 100, just before they disappear is a wasted day since they do nothing but to occupy space.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Water Fertilizer on Rainy Days Test
A whole furrow of 30 crops and 1 Water Fertilizer was set up.

Spring 22nd - Sunny Morning, Water Fertilizer waters furrow as usual.
Spring 23rd - Sunny Morning, the Water Fertilizer was used up, leaving around 50% (sprite shown)
Spring 24th - Weather was fixed via AR Code to be Rainy. Water Fertilizer remains 50%.
Spring 25th, 26th, 27th - Rainy Mornings, Water Fertilizer remains 50%.
Spring 28th - Rainy Morning, even though the animation according to the Water Fertilizer it's shown, it has not been used since the Rainy Mornings started.
Spring 28th - Started with Sunny Morning, then changed around noon to Rainy.
Spring 28th - Started with Sunny Morning, then changed around noon to Rainy. By now the Water Fertilizer appears to have worn out.
Spring 28th - Sunny Morning, the Water Fertilizer is gone and the furrow s dry.

Conlusion is that during Rainy Mornings the Water Fertilizer is not used even if the animation is shown a it was. Still, even if the weather changes to Rainy during the day the Water Fertilizer will still be counted as used.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Water Fertilizer usage on empty espaces
A farrow of 27 spaces was set up having only 1 Water Fertilizer on an edge and 1 Cucumber Seed on the middle.
Image

Spring 22nd - Water Fertilizer waters furrow as usual.
Spring 23rd - Water Fertilizer was used up, leaving around 50% (sprite shown).
Spring 24th - Water Fertilizer now has around 30%.
Spring 25th - Water Fertilizer still has around 30% but didn't water all the spaces.
Spring 26th - Water Fertilizer still has around 30% but the furrow is dry meaning next morning it will be gone.

Conclusion is that, even if there are no seeds/crops/flowers to water, since the soil can be watered the Water Fertilizer will use up a dose to water that blank soil.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Rot Test
When I began all the tests it was Spring 7th. Since I took the backup of my real game there were some Turnips, those Turnips were ready to be harvested on Spring 8th; from there I left them on the ground unharvested and UNWATERED until I finished the testing (Spring 31st).
When I harvested them they were as good as new, they had "Supah Fresh!" freshness, not even half a Star was lost (seeds were 1 Star Rank and those Turnips too).

Conclusion is that not harvested crops do not wilt/rot/lose freshness.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The End

And well, that's my testing. I'm gonna be honest, it was kinda tiring. Considering it was the first year (since it was the new game I started) I gotta say:
  • People are extremely annoying, always comming to your house asking for something.
  • Too many cooking festivals, what the hell?
  • Inah or w/e the Konohana's Mayor name is, likes to cheat on Cooking festivals by sending you in behalf of her town with 5-Star dishes cooked with items that she herself gave you...tsk...tsk ¬¬

Final Notes:
a) Sorry about my english, is not my native language.
b) Sorry I did not test the other two Fertilizers, I was kinda sick by the second test.
c) This game is fun lol. It's rather different that the rest HM games but it's kinda unique. Even though I like having a lot of time to harvest wild garbage it kinda gets annoying running up and down the cliff everyday, pressing the D-Pad as my life depended on it. My poor thumb hurts like hell after playing barely 7 days of the game (and the rest of my fingers too because DSi XL is kinda heavy, not to mention my wrists x.X).

Anyway, I hope someone finds this useful because it was kind tired doing it. If I'm wrong about something please tell me, otherwise I'll too have the wrong idea when playing the game and can cause me several hours of yelling at my DS, weeping on my bathroom and climb that « Harvest Goddess » forbidden mountain just to farm some rupees, I mean, money.

I guess since I took too long while redacting the post the site disconnected me and my post appeared as if I was anonymous :C

Oh well, I hope you guys find this useful. If I still have free time I'll try to compile all the info from the website in an Excel file in order to make somewhat an "Offline" FAQ and submit it so anyone can download it :D I even googled how to make desktop apps using flash because it would look really cool animated and with hyperlinks and stuff but I need to download Adobe Air and let's just say that my neigbour is borrowing me his internet connection without his knowledge =P

Aaaaanyway, have a nice farming. (I can't wait to keep playing, I'm dying to have an Alpaca :D!)

Amazing work! I love it, especially how you've actually used some nice clear screenshots, that really helps me to understand the concepts much better. I also love the way you've approached this so thoroughly and scientifically, it means you come to some good conclusions based on evidence you've shown us and not just assumed things based on an uncontrolled circumstance, and that makes me feel much better about taking the advice here : )

Thank you guys ^o^~

Good that you liked it, I've been wanting to do more tests but I can't come up with something. I still need to try Speed & Bounty Capacity but I'll do that later.

Btw, don't you think kinda sucks that Fertilizers don't last that much considering the items needed to be crafted?

If anyone has an idea of something I can test I'll be happy to give it a try.

Someone brought up something you could test here; viewtopic.php?f=24&t=146583
Basically they want to know if you water something after midnight, will it be counted as the second watering for the first day, or will it be counted as the first watering of the second day? Read the thread if that doesn't make sense, it's hard to explain :P

I personally don't think it will be counted in the second day because this version of HM seems to see when you go to bed as the end of a day, since that's how the shipping works too.

Magnifique. I think that's how you spell it, anyway. (Don't get mad at me, I'm only thirteen.)

I agree! Especially if more scientifically approached experiments can be added in such an organised and well documented way, it really helps people to understand some of the more complicated things in the game : )

Thank you guys :D

All the time spent on my testing was now worth it, I'm really happy that you appreciate the effort.

That was actually me asking =P I wanna test it the right way but this game is so addictive and when I stop playing I only think about playing again so it's kinda hard to put it aside and playing not for exactly fun.

I'll try later hehe.

I'm pretty sure it counts for the second watering, although I haven't tested it. I almost always water my Konohana fields way after midnight and they grow as expected when you water them twice.

But anyway, an experiment would be very welcome, so we'll know beyond reasonable doubt.

And congraulations, LinkMaster, the topic is fantastic :)
