I hope this guide will help you in your quest to better your garden.

HARVEST MOON: A NEW BEGINNING - GARDENING TOUR GUIDE

I. Introduction:
On Summer 11 of your first year, Dunhill will visit your house and explain the Gardening Show. He will give you the blueprint for the Gardening Space, which requires 8 Small Stone and 15 Small Material Stone to build. You can place the Gardening Space on your farm or in the village area but it will take up a 14x14 area of space. Where you locate the space is not permanent, although you can't move the Gardening Space if you have objects placed on it.

This event is specifically for you to show off your design eye to impress the show judges with the items you've placed in your Gardening Space. If you do a good job with your layout, then you can gain friendship with the villagers and a little bit of money.

Side note: even if you don't like the gardening tour you must have it 3 times in order to complete one of the tasks in "town restoration"

If you place down a item and you don't like where it is you can simply push it (in edit mode) and it will move you will not have to pick it up to move it. This also works with houses (but sadly not trees..)

III.What Goes Together
As mentioned on Cher's guide in here Certain decorations go together. Some examples are...

Individual objects can have bonus GP, depending on the type of item. Benches are pretty low, but the higher level objects like Gazebos and potted trees can be worth a lot of GP.

Sets are a combination of several pieces placed into the space. You can earn a bonus 100 to 150 GP if you put all of the set's objects together.

Themes are another way to earn extra points. Objects can coordinate together in like-styles and will earn a number of points towards a theme bonus. For example, the Yellow Bench, Barrels, and Hale Bale are some of the items that belong to the Country theme. If you place enough of the same theme together, you'll earn a theme bonus. Some items fit into more than one theme, which potentially can earn you multiple theme bonuses.

Individual Objects:
+3 Gardening Points: Sign, Bush, Cone Tree, Ball Topiary
+5 Gardening Points: the colored benches (Red Bench, White Bench, etc.), Signpost, Double Ball Topiary, Lattice Fence, all colored fences (Green Fence, Silver Fence, etc.), and all colored curved fences (Black Curved Fence, Gold Curved Fence, etc.). The non-colored fencing, such as Bovine, Fluffy, Wooden, and so on, are not worth any extra Individual Gardening Points.
+7 Gardening Points: single-potted flowers, Cow Statue, Sheep Statue, Chicken Statue, Horse Statue, and colored fence arches (Blue Arch, Pink Arch, etc.)
+10 Gardening Points: Signboard, Potted Cactuses, Hanging Pot, Tricycle Pot, Watering Can Pot, Boot Pot
+15 Gardening Points: Weather Vane and flowerbeds
+20 Gardening Points: Cactus Flowerbed, Bamboo Pot, Potted Cherry Tree, Potted Ginkgo Tree, Potted Palm Tree
+25 Gardening Points: Red Flower Basket, Green Flower Basket, Yellow Flower Basket, Pink Flower Basket, Purple Flower Basket, White Flower Basket
+30 Gardening Points: Lion Topiary
+50 Gardening Points: Toy Robot, Bamboo Grove, Pine Tree, Cherry Tree, Ginkgo Tree, Palm Tree, Arbor, Curved Arbor
+70 Gardening Points: Mammoth Topiary, Gazebo

These alone will not earn you many points so you will have to match them with a Set or a Theme to get extra points.

Object Sets
100 Point Sets
Colored Pots Set: Red Pots, Blue Pots, and White Pots
Flower Arch Set: Red Flower Arch and Blue Flower Arch
Maiden Statue Set: Maiden With Spear and Maiden With Shield
Totem Set: Totem Pole and Large Totem Pole

150 Point Sets

Brick Set: Brick Stack, Brick Pillar, and Brick Wall
Stone Set: Stone Bench, Stone Pillar, and Stone Fence
Wooden Set: Wooden Bench, Wooden Pillar, and Wooden Fence
Farm Set: Scarecrow, Weather Vane, Hay Bale, and Well
Beach Set: Beacon, Old Table, Log Chair, and Hammock
Sakura Set: Stone Lantern, Eastern Table, Tea Table, and Parasol
Bistro Set: Fancy Street Light, Table, Garden Chair, and Parasol Table

edit:
If you mix and match your sets be careful, some of the sets go great together and can have a positive result. BUT if you don't mix and match well it can end badly. I myself have mixed the wood set and the stone set together and nothing good came out of it, BUT that doesn't meant you cant pull it off. Just try adding more things, a lot of the judges don't like spaces that are too bare so just add as much as you can.

Quoted by Cher: "Another "set" that you can use outside of your Gardening Space is the Gardening Show Combo. If you place a combination of at least 10 of the following items in the same area as the Gardening Space, then you will earn a bonus 100 GP during the Gardening Show: Red Flower Arch, Blue Flower Arch, Tricycle Pot, Watering Can Pot, and Boot Pot."

Coordinating Themes
There are several theme categories that objects can belong to. Some decorations only belong to one theme while others match many themes. The 12 theme categories are: Animal, Eastern, Chic, Country, Fall, Oriental, Spring, Summer, Unique, Water, Western, and Winter.

For the Animal, Chic, Fall, Spring, Summer, Unique, Water, and Winter themes you only need to have 10 theme points or more to earn a bonus 100 GP. This is pretty easy to do! If you put down two Margaret Flowerbeds (+4 to Spring each) and a Potted Pink Roses (+2) then you'll earn 100 GP just from those three items (4+4+2 = 10 Spring points).

For the Eastern, Country, Oriental, and Western themes you'll need at least 50 points in the theme's category to earn the +100 GP. But, if you happen to place enough objects to have 100 theme points or more, then you'll earn 200 GP!

IV. Judges Decisions
On the morning of the 11th, Dunhill will lead you from your house to the Gardening Space. The judges that appear are random; some judges may be villagers while others are faceless people. You will have between four and twenty judges depending on how well your last Gardening Show turned out. If it was bad, you'll have fewer judges. If it was good, then you'll have more judges than the last show.

Total Gardening Points x Number of Judges = Garden Show reward

If you have over 1000 Gardening Points, Dunhill will come back and tell you that someone wants to buy your garden objects. You can then sell all of the items you placed on your Gardening Space for twice the price the items are worth! You won't sell the Gardening Space itself, but just the decorations that you've placed in its space.

Once the Gardening Show is over, you will be returned to your house at 10:00 am.

If you got the Scribble noteover the judges head that means that your garden did not do good at all.
With this result you can get no to very little money.

If you get the ... over the judges head that means you did not to good not to bad. You earn a little bit more money and you will have more judges at your next gardening tour.

When you get a :lala: over the judges head you did a very good job. However it is still not the best. You will earn a lot more money and naturally have more judges at the next show.

If you get the  (or equivalent of a heart) that means you did VERY good. You will earn a lot of money, and possibly have someone by the items on your garden (not guaranteed although)

Save the night before the gardening tour. That way if you fail the gardening tour you can reload and change your garden.

Depending on the judges they like certain things if you save the night before the judges will stay the same.

Edit:
You MUST change your garden a little each month, if you keep more than half of the items that you used on your last garden the judges will not like it and even lose a little friendship points. If you do keep some things in your garden from the last show that is fine just make sure you change most of it.

If you get a ... on your garden that means you did okay. Just reload you day and add more to the garden, when I added more and went through the judging again I earned more money the second time around.

Then I did it again and added even more to the garden and earned MORE money then the second time. You can repeat this process as much as you want but don't go over board. I only added one or two items at a time to make sure,
1) I didn't forget anything.
2) If they didn't like it as much as the first time you know what not to add.
V. FAQ's
Q. Will I need any of these decorations for anything other then the Gardening Tour?
A. Yes, Some of the items that I listed you will need to complete in order to progress in the game "the town restoration" requires you to make some items and place them around the village.

Some of those items are: Bush, Street Light, Wooden Bench, Well, Ball Topiary, and more.

Q. What if I put two themes together such as the Wooden theme and the Stone theme?
A. I've tried this myself. I would put the wooden theme on one side and the stone theme on the other side. The judges did not like this one bit. However Junko Mihari (a fellow Ushian) has mixed the Farm Set and the Wooden Set together and had Great results. It depends on how you mix it together, if you fail just reload and change it slightly. It can have very diferent results from just a little change.

VI. Pictures of the gardens

Here I will post pictures of the garden shows, I'll also include the occasional video. That includes my own when I can.
I'll post the good, the bad and in between when I get the chance. For now this is all I have.

(this was made by: cherubae)

Unfortunately Cherubae did not do so well on this garden tour.

(this is one of the gardens that I did sorry about the poor quality pic's)

This one I got a ... on

Image
This one I failed completely.

These are from Cher's guide
Image

Image

(I'm assuming she won these ones because those gardens are just amazing)

I will add more as I progress.

VII. Changing the garden

As I mentioned earlier in this guide, that just because you won one garden tour (or came close) does not mean that if you keep the same set/theme that you will win the next one. Also if you recycle half of what you used in you last garden tour you will lose friendship points (so in other words you can keep a few things but change most of your garden)

Also NEVER agree to have the garden tour and then have nothing in the garden you will also lose friendship points that way too.

So occasionally change your garden try new things, depending what you do can change how the out come is.

IX. Sets and Combo's
This section will be for the sets and combos that you can make with the decorations.

If you would like to add more info please do I will update this occasionally so...HAPPY GARDENING!

That's only if you agree to a tour and then leave the space completely blank come the day of. They'll be incredibly angry with you, then. :c

You'll also lose 500FP if you recycle half or more of your previous entry. It's not hard to avoid. c:

In my first gardening tour I just had the wood theme and the judges didn't like it. So I reloaded and added the stone theme as well and it bumped my score from dislike to okay.

So I think mixing those two themes are okay. D:

Unfortunately, unless someone can figure that out themselves or via coding, your guess is as good as mine. :c
I assume most potted plants belong to the season of their planting, such as I assumed Potted Nadeshiko's fell under the Fall Theme. You can also assume if the description involves something, they fall under that theme as well. Like the Yellow Benches are compared to the color of Ginjko Leaves, which are a fall tree.

Sorry if this is a bad place to post this, but I was wondering what the best/cheapest way to make a good gardening space for the Fall one in year 1 (the first time)
I'm kinda lost at what to do, and although I'm only on summer 12, I'd like some help.

What's the cheapest thing I can do that will still let me get a fair bit of money and a good mark from the judges?

thanks in advance

haha ok xD I'll just make all the stuff I can afford at the moment and put it together. I'll save before it too, so then I can change things if they don't like it.

Hmm, well I would suggest combining the Wooden and Stone sets, while trying to go for a Fall Theme. I know it was relatively cheap for me.

So for the Wooden Set it would be:
Spoiler:
Wooden Bench-----Small Lumer x5
Wooden Pillar-----Lumber x5
Wooden Fence-----Small Lumber x5

The Stone set is:
Spoiler:
Stone Bench-----Small Material Stone x5
Stone Fence-----Small Material Stone x5
Stone Pillar-----Material Stone x5

For the Fall theme I would suggest 5 Potted Nadeshikos, assuming each one falls under the fall category and attributes 2 points to the Theme. I personally went for 6 because I like making my gardens symmetric.

Potted Nadeshiko's require
Spoiler:
Potted Nadeshiko-----Small Material Stone x3 , Soil x3 , Nadeshiko x2

and they grow in before the 11th, I know that much.

If you have access to the mine and have been saving, then the yellow benches should also fall under the Fall Theme, though this is an assumption. Yellow Benches Require
Spoiler:
Yellow Bench-----Small Lumber x3 , Topaz x1

For designing the actual garden itself, I recommend going the symmetry route. You're trying to get as much on the plot of land as is humanly possible, being so early in the game (The decorations around this time aren't worth a lot compared to the later decorations,) and symmetry is good if you want it to be aesthetically pleasing as well.

You can conduct the symmetry either by mirroring everything, or simply by mirroring the sets.

Although, it's completely up to you what to do, you could just stuff the entire garden with random things from around town if you so wished, without any coordination whatsoever. As long as it works in the end. c:
