Introduction

Welcome to the RF2 Mini Guide. This guide was written by Guestie :3, Misti Rose, and Kupo (along with many other contributors - see Credit List). The main purpose of this guide was so that people who are unable to download guides for whatever reason (slow computers, restricted users, school/university computers, etc.) are still able to access a reliable source of RF2 Information. It's also nice and convenient to have it right on the forum for quick access.
One thing to remember about the RF2 Mini Guide is that we are always accepting contributions, suggestions, tips - with full credit given. If you see something wrong, whether it's faulty information or even a typo, please let us know and we'd be happy to fix it. We're always happy to answer any questions about the game or this guide. Please post in this thread or PM one of us for help! Enjoy the guide~

One more thing - there is no Quests section in this guide due to the fact that it would stretch the page to forever, but if you'd like quest information you can refer to a link at the bottom of the guide, right after the Credit List. It will refer you to a guide by Lerion87 on GameFAQs.

1. Fishing
Made by Kupo

This section contains a complete list of all the fish in the game as well as the locations they can be found. The First Generation section is fully complete, and the Second Generation section requires a few additions but for the most part is also complete. Note that for Second Generation the fish are arranged by location: this is because it's a lot easier for me to work with. There are tons of fishing spots 2nd Gen, so listing it by fish name just isn't convenient at all. Also, one fish isn't always rare - for example Pond Smelt is rare at Trieste Forest - River Stream, but not at Padova Mts - Flowing River. Anyways, please make us of the Ctrl + F function to find the fish you're looking for.

.:TIPS
-Patience is key, both in real life fishing and the Rune Factory kind. Keep trying, some fish are especially rare.
-Charging your rod will increase the size of the fish you catch. Raising your fishing level will reduce the amount of RP consumed. New rods just allow higher charging and allow higher-level fish to be caught. None of these will affect what kind of fish you catch, except the Sacred and Expert rods, which may allow you to catch rarer fish.
-A good place to raise your fishing level is in the bathhouse or in the barn (the water troughs). Time will not pass, but your fishing level will still rise.
-Instead of pressing B to reel in your rod, you can touch anywhere on the touch screen to perform the same function. I use this when I'm doing something else - I turn the volume up, wait for the "you've got a bite" sound, then just absentmindedly touch the screen.
-Try all the bodies of water on the listed map - sometimes there's more than one place to fish on a map, and they can yield different fish.

2. Mining
Made by Kupo

This section of the guide lists all the metals, gems and elemental crystals as well as where they can be mined. This section has been updated for 2nd Gen~ Palermo Shrine mining isn't included yet, though. Please, please look for this very important symbol: ¹. This means that this ore can only be mined in the listed area during SECOND GENERATION. Don't go looking for Silver in Trieste Forest if you're still in 1st Gen - you won't find any.
Legend: * = Rare
¹ = Second Generation only

Scrap Iron: Any cave
Iron: Any cave
Bronze: Any cave
Silver: Padova Mountains, Messhina Valley, Trieste Forest¹, Blessia Island¹
Gold*: Padova Mountains, Blessia Island
Platinum*: Padova Mts.¹, Palermo Shrine¹(Can also be bought from Yue for 8,800 G)
---
Ruby: Blessia Island, Messhina Valley¹
Emerald: Trieste Forest, Messhina Valley¹
Sapphire*: Padova Mountains, Messhina Valley¹
Amethyst: Blessia Island, Messhina Valley¹
Aquamarine: Trieste Forest, Messhina Valley¹
Diamond*: Padova Mountains, Messhina Valley¹
---
Water Crystal: Padova Mountains
Fire Crystal: Blessia Island
Wind Crystal*: Messhina Valley
Earth Crystal*: Trieste Forest

Number of Mining Rocks per Dungeon (1st Gen)
Trieste Forest: 4
Blessia Island: 9
Messhina Valley: 5
Padova Mts: 14

Number of Mining Rocks per Dungeon (2nd Gen)
Trieste Forest: 30
Blessia Island: 29
Messhina Valley: 36
Padova Mts: 31
Palermo Shrine: 32

.:TIPS
-The Battle Hammer (from Tanya for 1,500 G) increases the frequency of the metal ores (Iron, Bronze, Silver and Gold) while the Regular Hammer increases the frequency of gems (Ruby, Emerald, Sapphire, Diamond, Aquamarine, Amethyst). The Regular Hammer also appears to mine more elemental crystals. In 2nd Gen however it seems best to use the normal hammer in all cases, especially because it's faster.
-Save before entering a dungeon (especially the ones with a small amount of mining rocks like Trieste Forest) and then reload until you get the ore you want, since the rocks don't regenerate until you sleep.
-The effects of charging your hammer are still unknown - so fiddle around with your charges and see what you get. If you find anything interesting please let us know.
-Raising your mining skill may help you out, so mine every day! At least you can keep/ship the extras you don't need.

(For example, you can plant a bag of pink turnips 7 times max in spring on your farm, and that nets you a total profit of 6370 G, minus the seed costs.) The bolded crops are those that net you the most profit per season.
**Of course, crops that regrow are most profitable when planted in dungeons.

Leek: 12,000 G
Daikon Radish: 13,200 G
White Cabbage: 12,480
Hot-Hot Fruit: 16,400 G

HELPFUL TIPS:

**Once you get the seed maker in 2nd gen, you can turn your crops back into seeds and sell them to Douglas for half the "store seed price."
**When you switch generations, you can avoid the big storm (which destroys a lot of your crops) by going to the school after 12 AM.
**When you switch generations, 8 years lapse and many of your crops will be fully grown when you play as Aria/Aaron. This might be helpful if you're growing phantom crops to speed up their ripening. However, be aware that your crops might be destroyed.
**You can also use the shortcut function for much faster crop harvesting: press left shoulder button and use stylus to tap crops and highlight them orange.
**Bring a monster partner to make farming easier in dungeons.
**Buffalo can smash boulders and Black Birds can chop branches if you bring them into the dungeons (available 2nd gen).
**GOLD CROPS (cabbage, pumpkin, potato, and turnip) become available to grow in 2nd gen. Use "inquisitive waltz" to find them in their respective seasonal dungeons. (Use seed maker to get more seeds.)

**Phantom Crops are not included in this guide because they must be grown in the dungeons in order to ripen. They all take longer than a season to mature, and Douglas sells them for a hefty price in his shop. Note that you should take advantage of the "winter 50% off sale" to buy phantom seeds and plant them for a huge profit in their respectful dungeons. There are phantom crops for each season, so browse through Douglas' store for information on each. (Some popular examples of phantom crops include the 4-LEAF CLOVER and EMERY FLOWER)**

>>Any other tips/suggestions/corrections are happily accepted :)<<

4. Alvarna Festivals

Made by Misti Rose

This is a basic guide to the festivals offered every season in Alvarna, usually held by Herman. They generally occur on "Holidays," except for New Year's Eve (which takes place on a Friday). The festivals are a great opportunity to boost FP/LP with the villagers. Just talking to them on a non-competitive festival can increase FP/LP by 1. On competitive festivals, such as the fishing & mining festival, winning will increase all of the girls' LP for you by 1 point. So relax and enjoy all the festivities that Alvarna has to offer!

SPRING:
1st-New Year's Day. Talk to villagers to increase FP/LP.
13th-Flower Festival. Ask up to 3 girls to view the cherry blossoms with you.
25th-Eating Contest. Compete against Douglas & Gordon at taking at least 35 bites in a timed competition. Tip: put your thumb over the "A" button and run it back & forth repeatedly as if you were strumming a guitar to get 35 bites or higher. 1st place prize is Formula A.

SUMMER:

1st-First Day of Summer. Talk to villagers to increase FP/LP.
7th-Monster Taming Contest. Tame a Pomme-Pomme (red apple monster) the fastest in a competition against Jake and Max. (Having a high communication skill helps here; also be aware that the clock is still ticking while you name the monster, so make it quick!) Make sure you have room in your barn for one more monster, and equip the petting glove ahead of time to get a head start. 1st place prize is Formula B.
19th-Dance Festival. You can ask only 1 girl to this romantic festival. (There's a very sweet dancing sequence that you get to watch for this festival <3)
25th-Fishing Contest. Catch a 18cm or longer sardine for this festival to win. Easiest place to catch sardine is off the dock at Blessia Island. You can catch the fish ahead of time and give it to Herman on the festival date, but this competition isn't timed. You will be competing against Dorothy & Barrett.1st place prize is Formula C.

FALL:

1st-Adventure Contest. Find a hidden amethyst in Blessia Island, Old Altar/Ship area. It is hidden out of view by the two blue rune flowers. This is a timed competition. You will be competing against Jake & Tanya. Note: you cannot hand a pre-mined amethyst from your bag to Herman for this competitoin; he will simply accept it as a gift. So no shortcuts here! 1st place prize is Greenifier.
13th-Harvest Festival. Unlike in RF1, giving the villagers a fall vegetable won't be acknowledged as part of this celebration. Simply talk to all villagers to raise FP/LP.
25th-Monster Contest. Choose a monster with the highest FP to enter in this contest. This is an easy contest to win if you have a high communication skill and have been taking good care of your monsters. 1st place prize is Health It.

WINTER:

7th-Shooting Star Festival. The last romantic festival of the year. You may ask one girl to watch the stars with you, and get some very romantic--or funny--dialogue. Rosalind's event is said to be the most romantic.
19th-Mining Contest. Mine a ruby for Herman from Blessia island in the shortest amount of time to win this competition. You will be competing against Yue & Roy. You can mine the ruby ahead of time and give it to Herman after he announces "START." 1st place prize is Invinciroid.
30th-New Year's Eve. Talk with all villagers to raise FP/LP. Happy new year!

You've now enjoyed a full year of Alvarna's festivities. Happy festivaling! (2nd gen festivals are slightly different & more difficult.)

**NOTE: If you choose to do your normal farm chores before you talk to anyone at a festival, they are still available in their houses after 6 PM for you to converse with them and increase FP/LP. I would recommend talking to all the villagers first, however.

.:TIPS
-More than one or two gifts at a time will have NO ADDED EFFECT! It's suggested that you give only one gift per day, and spread them out over many days - this will have more effect in the long run.
-Gifts not raising FP/LP fast enough? Try talking to every villager every day - especially Festival Days, when you'll receive a large boost.
-Remember Birthdays! Birthday Gifts raise FP by a HUGE amount (1-3 FP depending on the person) so don't miss out~
-Whenever a quest comes up on the Bulletin Board... complete it! Certain quests can raise FP and LP of villagers - and not only the one that posted the quest either.

6. Spellbooks & Inquisitive Waltz
Made by songwolf and Midnite Lace

{Spellbook Pages & Locations}
This section contains a complete list of all the Spellbooks in the game, where to obtain them, and where to obtain the missing pages. Missing pages will make the spellbook more powerful. All the missing pages can only be obtained in Second Gen – if a quest is listed, such as Gordon’s third quest, it means Gordon’s third quest in Second Gen. Also note that the School’s Library and the Dojo can be built by Byron during Second Gen for 10,00G and 100 wood each. The format of the list is as follows:
Name of Spellbook

.:TIPS
-Nocturnal monsters come out at 6:00 PM.
- Monsters gain FP when you brush them (not when their produce in harvested) and the higher your Communication skill the faster their FP will go up.
-"Small" produce is 1-3 FP, "Medium" produce is 4-6 FP, and "Large" produce is 7-10 FP.
-Monsters go outside at 4:00 PM, and they begin working at 4:30 - though they won't do much work if their FP is low. Harvesting monsters automatically ship whatever they pick up, so if you want to keep your crops, take them before 4:30 PM.
-Feed can seem expensive at the beginning, but plant some grass seeds on your field as soon as possible - it's much cheaper! See "5. Crops" for additional information on grass and other crops.

8. Second Generation
Made by Kemine

I'll get this over with quick. This section of the guide contains minor SPOILERS. They are VERY minor, and chances are that if you've been around these forums... you already know. Just a warning for those of you that want to keep it totally clean.

First of all, second generation happens after the school is built, and it basically time-skips 8 years and allows you to play as your child. This guide covers the requirements of second generation, what carries over between generations (and what's different between them), and the suggested stuff you gather before you make the switch.

Requirements

The requirements you need to fulfill before advancing to second generation are...
  • Marriage.
  • 15 days after marriage, you will have a child.
  • 10 days after marriage you will be able to "wish" for what gender your baby will be (this means you can choose). Pick carefully - the gender you choose will be the character you play as in 2nd gen.
  • When you have your child you will be asked to build a school. Talk to the mayor - the school requires 100,000 G and 1,000 Wood to build.
  • After 10 days the school will be completed. Walk up to it (AFTER 12 AM! There is a huge storm that will destroy all your crops - however if you walk up to the school after 12 AM your dungeon crops will be saved. Your farm will be destroyed though, no way around that), and you will start second generation.
What Carries Over and What's Different?

I have good news for you! Everything carries over from first to second gen, except the FP and LP of all the villagers - those are all reset to 0 (though your monsters' FP will remain) and your farming tools - these turn into the "rusty" tools, which are no longer able to charge up (however, you can upgrade them and eventually they'll be even more powerful than the basic tools from 1st Gen). Any items you have (shelves, fridge, inventory, equipped), all your skills, HP, RP and your level, your money, fodder and your wood - these all carry over!

As for the changes, the most notable one is that second generation is much more difficult. Although your stats carry over, monsters become more powerful than before - some are able to kill you in a single attack. Dungeons are no longer a walk in the park! Dungeons are also expanded - you're now able to slip through the fences that you couldn't get by before, and remember those weird statues? Now, each one (there are 3-4 in each dungeon) will give you a specific task you have to complete:

Trieste Forest
Statue 1:
3 Pink Turnips
Statue 2:
12 Apples
Statue 3:
Defeat 4 Tricky Mushrooms

Blessia Island
Statue 1:
6 Pineapples
Satue 2:
Mini Quiz
Answers: A,C,C,A
Statue 3:
Till 36 squares on southeast beach.
Statue 4:
Have 6 Moondrop and 6 Pink Cat flowers at hand.

Messhina Valley
Statue 1:
Defeat 3 Buffalo, 4 Queen Bees, and finally 5 Hobgoblins.
Statue 2:
You must grow 36 fall crops in the Holy Statue area. They must all be mature for the statue to disappear.
Statue 3:
This one asks you to bring it 5 silver. Once you do so, it requires you to bring 12 pieces of scrap iron.

Padova Mountains
Statue 1:
Bring 4 aquamarines. After you offer them, bring 3 diamonds.
Statue 2:
You must clear and till all three of the fields within the cave.
Statue 3:
Defeat 4 Tundra. Go back to kill 5 High Orc Vikings, and finally 6 Dark Slime.

Suggested Things to do Before the Switch

The list of items and tasks you have to do for each statue seems pretty big, but luckily some of the items can be gathered ahead of time, while you're still in First Generation. Remember that dungeons become much more difficult, and the ores you had no trouble mining before (like Water Crystals, Wind Crystals or Gold) will be very difficult to access! Here's the list of items you should have before advance to second gen:
  • 3 Pink Turnips
  • 12 Apples
  • 6 Pineapples
  • 6 Moondrops
  • 6 Pink Cats
  • 5 Silver
  • 12 Scrap Iron
  • 4 Aquamarines
  • 3 Diamonds
That's the list of the items you can obtain - but there's a bit more you can do before you decide to make the switch. You'll need a lot of wood and money. Your school and your barn will need wood and money in order to upgrade, and you'll need even more of these vital supplies to build a Library and Dojo. Don't overdo it, but if you switch over with 1,000 Wood and around 300,000 G you shouldn't run into any problems.

The suggested level area for jumping over is 11-13. This is the level area you’ll want to be at, if not around 14-15, to beat Trieste Forest, the first area you’ll face. Monsters become much more difficult, so be prepared!

If you are going for a perfect quest list, you are going to want to woo ALL the girls before you marry. Most girls have quests all the way up to 10 LP, so be persistent! The villagers usually only have quests up to 4-6 FP. One of the quests, Cecilia's final quest has a glitch - no matter how many times you give her the marriage token the quest won't disappear from the board... if you marry someone else it disappears but won't appear on the "Completed" list. For perfectionists as well: if you've completed all the quests then you'll have all the girls' marriage tokens. They cannot be shipped, and after you marry someone else you can give the marriage tokens back to the girls for some interesting dialogue, but you can only do this in FIRST GEN. Keep them until second gen and they'll just take up shelf space.

Also one thing to note - if you haven't obtained any of the empty bottles, the milker, the clippers or the brush there's no need to worry. If you advance to 2nd Gen without them they'll appear in the fireside chest with the rest of the rusty tools. Mighty convenient =) That's it! You're now ready for Second Generation... have fun~

DURING SECOND GEN: I highly recommend you catch yourself a Hunter Wolf in Padova Mountains as soon as possible! They are dangerous so save beforehand. You may need to clear away a statue or two but nothing too serious or difficult really. To catch the wolf, lure him towards you, and when he gets ready to jump, position yourself so that you pet him as he jumps by you - this is crucial! Be careful about it, and it won't take very long. Brush him every day and in no time he'll be more powerful than you are. He's especially useful to have while watering in dungeons such as Messhina Valley or Padova Mts where the monsters would hit you too often.

9. Sugoroku
Made by Nate McCloud

This section of the guide covers Sugoroku, a simple board game that can be played with others via WiFi, during the second generation of the game. It’s suggested you play this game when all your crop fields are empty because some effects of the game fill ALL (dungeon and farm) your fields with crops.

The rolling order is determined by when you joined the room. When it’s your turn, roll the dice (time your roll well to get a specific number, but wait too long and the die will be auto-rolled) and you’ll move forward. The board looks like this:

Image
s, f: Start, Finish

f = Flower
t = Turnip
s = Snowman

There are three spaces: Flower, Turnip, and Snowman.

Flower: These spaces are pretty much always good. Effects include receiving: wood, monster feed, money, seeds, levels, skill levels, tool levels, weapon levels, max HP increase, new recipes, have all your crops fully grown, have all your crops watered, fill your field with season crops, slow down the rolling die, or even roll the die for another player – to name a few. The seasonal crops are Pink Turnips for Spring, Tomatoes for Summer, Yams for Fall, and White Grass for Winter (and yes, even the White Grass produces Runes in this case). Make sure all your fields are empty as these will replace ALL crops in ALL your fields! It can mean big profits or big wastes if you have other crops growing.

Turnip: These spaces are also generally good. Most of the time, you'll get a random number of Turnips (the winter crop). Other times, one of the other crop effects will happen - this includes the season crop effect, so once again beware!

Snowman: These spaces are never good. Some effects include: losing wood, monster feed, water in your waterpot, money, levels, skill levels, current RP, current or maximum HP, stats, fix your next die roll, speed up your next die roll, or making you skip your next turn, among other ill effects. Fortunately, though, this square won't affect your crops or cause you to lose items from your inventory.

The game ends when all players have reached the end of the board, and all players will receive a prize depending on their place (first place with a very nice prize, and last place… not so nice prize).

10. Extras & Glitches
Made by Misti Rose

Note: Most of the glitches listed here are very minor, so don't feel that this game is unplayable by any means. I merely listed all of the tiny things to give people a heads-up about what to expect in their game--Rune Factory 2 is virtually "glitch-free," by Natsume standards. (XD)

(Extras)
-In 2nd gen, enter the workshop/school from 12PM-1:59PM with space in your rucksack. Douglas will appear and give you a random food dish--this can sometimes even be the rare fried love snapper dish, which is required for one of Herman's quests!
-You can exploit Herman's milker quest by having a full backpack when you complete the quest, so you get all the money but have to come back later for the milker. This nets you money again on your return trip. (Also can be done with Rosalind's basket quest.)
-To avoid storms if you forget to change the weather with Alicia, camp out in a dungeon that night OR pass out in your fields to wake up in Natalie's clinic the next day, guaranteeing a sunny day.
-Alicia has 2 types of weather chants; don't get them confused! "Jami la la" is for making the weather rainy, and "La lee loo la" is for making the weather sunny. (Rainy in 1st gen = 1,000G; sunny in 1st gen = 100G. Prices double in 2nd gen)
-Press select on your DS to turn on the "select square" in front of Kyle. Makes farming easier.
-Villagers' house hours: 9AM-6PM at beginning. After you reach 3 FP with the owner of the house, you can visit from 6PM-11:59PM as well.
-Villagers reveal their birthdays at 4 FP, but you might skip over this dialogue if you raise their FP too quickly. Give a gift on their birthdays (even if they haven't told you it), and it will appear on your calendar.

(Marriage Tokens)
-Dorothy: blessing pendant (received from Gordon)
-Mana: engagement ring (received from Douglas)
-Cecilia: round stone (given to you by Ceci)
-Alicia: crystal ball (found through Alicia's last quest)
-Rosalind: 100 roses bouquet (received from Max)
-Yue: yue swap ticket (given to you by Yue)
-Julia: memento ring (given to you by Yue after giving her Messhilight Ore & 10,000G)

(Glitches)
-People sometimes call you your son's name & vice versa due to scripting errors
-Natalie's clinic potion appearing as a random "item name" when you get it
-Missing the earthquake cut-scene if you camp, pass out, or sleep at Egan's inn the day before (Ceci's quest)
-Gordon not recognizing his own birthday
-People walking on water/fountains
-Lag in barn/dock/dungeons when there are too many sprites on screen
-Sometimes your monsters' FP will go down when you switch gens (it shouldn't)
-"Dropping" crops when you use the shortcut function to harvest and get hit by a monster
-Villagers sometimes "teleport" from area to area
-Villagers can re-enter buildings repeatedly until the clock turns a specific hour
-The barn sign glitch: When you come out of a dungeon around 4:30 PM and look at the sign next to your barn, your game can freeze.
-Herman "not liking" tomato juice in 2nd gen--probably a scripting error
-Alicia never mentions Julia in her love readings. Some rivalry here, perhaps?
-Cecilia's final quest is only completable if you MARRY her, otherwise it never disappears* or gets recorded on the quest board. Don't let this hinder your hopes at having a "complete" quest board, however.
*All girls' requests will disappear from the board after you marry.
-Queen Bees & Hornets in 2nd gen don't show the basket symbol at all until they have honey to harvest, so don't worry if the grayed-out basket doesn't appear on the barn sign.

If anyone else notices another glitch, please post in this topic so I can add it to the list. Thank you!

Ooh, wish I knew the shortcut thing earlier.

What do you mean by bringing a monster partner to help FARM? I just started 2nd gen, but in 1gen I would bring in the wolf partner so that while I'm watering/harvesting, he'd be fighting the monsters and whatnot so I'd level up at the same time. Can you bring in a harvesting monster who would help harvest the plants or a water monster to water the plants? I know they water and harvest the home field.

Very helpful guide, though! Nicely organized, too!

Well, i meant "help" you farm, as in not literally farming, but aiding you by warding off other monsters while you try to water. XD.. i guess it was kinda implied, haha.

Ah, yeah. XD I tend to take things literally in guides, so when you said help farm I was like "what!?" because all this time I'd been having to harvest all my strawberries and corn and yams and pineapple by myself. :<

XD And can you put "Other Villagers"? >__< sorry, i think i'm being OCD now.

Yay! I agree... I accidently sent Cherubae 3 PMs... the first one was to ask for the two topics to be stickied, the second was to tell her that we were going to combine them all... and the third was to give her the link to this topic >< I hope she doesn't mind... >_>

Haha XD Yeah I hope not ><

Hmm, you said your guide used to be in table format right Misti? If you took a screenshot, cropped it so only the table showed, enlarged it and then posted it as an image - would it work on the forums? Just wondering cause I bet you put a lot of work into the table it's a shame we can't use it... it might not work but just a suggestion^^ The guide is amazing by the way! Very nice and complete. I think one day I might do the math to see which crop is most profitable for each season (on your farm)... one day XD
