The protagonists.. Don't they look like throwbacks?

The minute I saw them these two came to mind.

The female protagonist was a dead ringer. The male, it's mostly his hair color and clothes.

All the brown-haired male MCs look the same to me, but I did quickly notice the new girl pretty much was a matured version of Claire. I don't mind at all though since I like Claire.

Well to be honest, apart from the more recent handheld games, the protagonists have looked alike.
Most of the male protagonists carried the same name too. Jack.
So it's not really something to be suprised about.

But in this game that is just their default appearance.

You can change the color of their skin, hair, eyes.
As well as their hair style, outfit, and possibly other things.

Yeah, the defaults do look like Pete and Claire. Personally, I actually like these designs better.

I instantly thought of Pete and Claire as well. (Prefer the originals, though I don't like Claire much to begin with so it goes to say I really don't like the default girl)

Well you can change their outfits so that souldn't be to big of an issue.
The only question is how quickly can you begin to change their outfits.
I would imagine you can select your character's general appearance from the start.
Would you also be able to choose your starting outfit, or have a secondary set in your home?
But if the hat is seperate from the outfit, I would imagine you could remove it very early in the game.

This. The new MC (male) looks cool and "chill" while the MC (female) has this tomboyish yet girly appearance.

Most are based off Pete so it's no doubt why they resemble each other. Mark is just Pete with a new hairstyle and better clothes.

I prefer Claire and Pete, but I do like the female PC here.

Incorrect. Fans are just too lazy to call them by their actual names, instead opting to call everyone "Jack".

I just noticed those four artworks even have them with the same farm tools.

Interesting.. I'd say it's a little throwback to the previous games, like how Chelsea is dressed like Sara.
