How to turn in place?

I have my hoe upgraded and making trenches is easy...if I have a place to stand. I connect as many as I can so I only water once but some spots on the edges, by the trees, have no place to stand and face the direction I want.

In other HMs, you could power up your tool then hit the direction arrow to turn in place before releasing. I can't figure out how to do that in ToTT. Anyone know the trick?

You can't. I tried that. Maybe some kind of jump/turn move is involved. iono, I can't even jump-catch butterflies.

I end up giving up and going the other way with my trenches. Very annoying.

Yeah you can't in this game. It frustrates me to no end because I kept trying, thinking I was doing something wrong, but it's just the game. I'm glad it wasn't just me that found this irritating

really? .__.;I swear I've been able to turn on the spot in this game...I just charged up my tool and pressed a directional button...I might have to test this tomorrow since I'm not that sure ^^;;

That's how it worked in all the other HM games (eg. mining around drop holes). Doesn't work in ToTT, hence this thread. =P

Grr... well, it would be annoying, but is it possible for you to use the hoe uncharged through that area to make your trenches until you get back to an area that allows you to stand where you want? (written as somebody who has never upgraded the hoe...so it may be a silly question... x_X)

Hmm, that's why I keep using my hoe at level 1 and will continue upgrading it only after the sickle... I can't even connect when it's charged

I just make trenches without chargin up since it's not exactly hard to get stamina in this HM. Otherwise, I'd just make trenches in row if I were you, but you can do what you want :]

It's not so much the charging up part but that the location of the starting trench butts up against the trees and there's no place to stand, facing the direction I want to go. I can go up or down but not sideways. Hard to explain but if I could turn while hitting or jump-turn or something, I can get that trench started.

I'll figure out a different pattern. My trenches needa all connect!!

When you're hoeing a trench, (at least, without charging up the hoe) you don't need to be facing the direction you want to go. I frequently sidestep a lot when making trenches or planting seeds. If you sidestepped in GrB, it works the same way in ToTT.

Just face whichever way you need to, to get at your starting square, then press A to hoe it, and while the hoeing animation is still going, press the direction you want to go - it doesn't matter if you're facing that way. The character should sidestep (or backstep, as the case may be) in the direction you press. While they're still side/back-stepping, press A again to dig the next trench spot, and so on.

Hmmm...that's true, you can sidestep and make trenches here. Thanks BlueT, will try that next time I can't fit between the spot and a fat tree. I'm so used to charging up and blasting the entire row at once, gotta go back to starting strat. =)
