All you really have to do is keep feeding them the treats you can get from Jessica's Livestock Store (or so I've heard). The store is closed on Wednesdays, rainy days, and Festival days, and you can usually find some sort of treat there. They have regular treats, nutra-treats, and vegetarian treats. And who knows? There could be more later on as well. You should feed the chickens, the cows, and the alpacas a treat a day to raise the amount of products you can get.

There are 4 kinds of treats in all: Regular, Veggie, Grain, and Nutra. A new kind of treat comes available in each season starting in Fall Year 1 (regular treats are available immediately) so you have all four available by Spring Year 2.

And just randomly feeding them a treat a day won't work to raise their production - you have to feed them a specific combo of treats, and that combo is different for each type of animal. That link that capaul put in has all the info.

you can also stock up on the treats, so if your chicken only needs 1 regular treat to help it produce another egg, you can buy 4 regular treats and give them to chicken each day until you run out. That way you only then have to feed the chicken 4 x how many veggie, nutra and grain treats a chicken needs to increase the number of eggs it produces.

The game keeps track of the treats you give (you can't see this but I recommend making a list) that way it makes it easier to increase productivity on your farm :D

I was kinda keeping track but it's too much trouble trying to identify the chicken with the stethoscope then finding the same scampering chicken again to give it a treat (it's do-able for cows, etc.). I hate giving chickens treats - they juke and run around like chickens with their heads...oh yeah, they're chickens. I end up tossing treats all over the friggin yard and feeding ones who already give 5 eggs.

Almost done with the cooking recipes so I think I'll just let them gain hearts and give me whatever eggs they can. Save up a few for requests and give up on chickens. Their product isn't really that profitable anyway.

I had this problem too, so I made a typed up table and printed it all out with it all sorted and neat, and instead of trying to identify each one and give different treats, my new system is to do one type of treat per day, so il give every animal a vegetable treat and so i can quickly go around to each and make sure iv given a treat for all animals. Because they all have several levels so it all counts towards their totals.

Yeah I was buying 99 of whatever treat I saw and fed them all to everyone. Most of them got to 5 products that way so that's the brute force method. Prolly costs me more than having a plan but it's quicker and gold is too easy to make so it's ok. I treat them correctly when I live in Konohana. At Bluebell, they all get whatever I have in my bag.

Out of curiosity...

Say I give my chicken 8 Treats (needs 2) and then the right amount of all the other treats it needs. Do you think those 6 extra treats will count towards towards the next levels, or just get canceled out when the chicken grows a production level?

I am near the end of Summer of my first year, so the only treats that I have access to are regular treats.

Currently, I buy 99 treats, and plan to give that pile of 99 treats to my 2 chickens, 2 cows, and 2 sheep. I have been giving them these treats to help raise their affection.

I live in Konohana, so I cannot get any more livestock yet.

I also cannot buy the following treats yet:
Vegetable Treats in Fall
Grain Treats in WInter
Nutra Treats in Spring of Year 2

I have been giving them the regular treats since I have purchased them in Spring.
The regular chickens have already had at least 40 regular treats.
The regular cows have also had about 40 regular treats, if not more.
I bought the regular lambs a few days later, so they have probably had about 30 regular treats.

When I am finally able to buy each of these 4 treats, should I rebegin the actual process, or just go ahead with the treats as they become available, making certain that they have the allotted amount of treats to push up their productivity.

Thank you.
I appreciate your help.

Woah, woah, woah!!! Correct me if I'm wrong guys, but 40 regular treats for 2 chickens is waayyyyyy over the top! If you visit http://fogu.com/hm10/your_farms/animal_production.php it will show you the number of treats needed for each type of animal, and you do those *4* times to reach the maximum level.

So, if you have one regular chicken;
2 treats (x4 for all levels of productivity in total) = 8
4 grain treats (x4 " " ) = 16
15 vegetable treats (x4 " " ) = 60
10 nutra treats (x4 " " ) = 40

Those are therefore the total number of each type of treat that one single, regular chicken will need to reach it's maximum productivity level of 5. Does this make more sense now? See giving that one chicken 20 treats or 40 treats or however many will be waste of time and gold, because only 8 will ever count towards any of it's levels of productivity...

I mean I could be wrong, I'm not the best at maths, but this is how it seems to me ^^; Someone else correct me if I've missed something..

Also, like Murasaki said, it's cumulative, they don't reset for any reason the game keeps a perfect track of how many of each is given to each animal, it just won't show you where your up to with them (hence why I keep a little tally/list for all my animals, so I don't give them more than they need and thus waste time/gold).

Hope that helps : )

(Edited to fix the 5 times to 4 times, thanks for that Sasuko I knew some part of my brain had derped :P )

you actually only need to times the treats by 4, since you only need to give 4 lots of the treats the animal's need to get them up to 5 treats

however you are correct in saying Tracey is giving way too many treats

Tracey as said before there is no need to give your animals 40 regular treats unless they do actually need 40 regular treats in total to produce 5 products, look at the link Clefairy put up and it will tell you how many treats your animals will need, then just times them by 4 and you will then know how many they need in total

that way it's not a waste of your money giving animals treats they don't even need :)

So let me see if my math is correct:
I only need to give the regular chicken the following treats:
a total of:
8 regular treats-2
60 Vegetable Treats-15
16 Grain Treats-4
40 Nutra Treats-10

The Regular Cow the following treats:
a total of:
28 regular treats-7
32 Vegetable Treats-8
60 Grain Treats-15
4 Nutra Treats-1

The Regular Sheep the following treats:
a total of:
8 regular treats-2
48 Vegetable Treats-12
48 Grain Treats-12
20 Nutra Treats-5

No more treats will affect their productivity, but just these amounts should get them up to 5 products.
I will start keeping a detailed record for the livestock.

Thank you everyone.
I appreciate all of your help.
