Magical Melody - now, what do you like about those games?
I got this idea after I saw the "favorite things about the old HM games" thread. So sorry for stealing your idea in a way, Slowpoke. :C Despite being a big fan of the series, I've actually only played a few games, so I can't say much for the ones I haven't played...
Magical Melody - The Rival System and the fact that you were pretty much the town's sole source of economy. For once I cared about farming and had fun doing it! Plus, trying to beat Jamie was a great challenge - I remember the first time I beat him/her/it, I was like "OH YEAH SUCK IT JAMIE."
ToT - This was my first HM game, and so I have to give it credit for the nostalgia value it gives me. The request events for the marriage candidates and the part time jobs were so great. I wish that they kept both of those games in AP. :C Mining was such a challenge - it took me over an in-game day to get to the bottom of Gelato Mine. At least you could tell what had worth and what didn't unlike in AP...
Animal Parade - The slower time. Yes, it was too slow at times, but if you ask me ToT's time was way too fast. The after-marriage was the best after-marriage HM had in a LONG time. I had fun continuing to fill up my spouse's hearts again, and the child system was just great. You actually took time to form a bond with them when they were at their final growth stage - considering the fact that in ToT the kid will probably have nine hearts by their final stage, it was a nice change and made it feel like my kid wasn't an interactive piece of furniture. The fact that you actually had events with them was a bonus! And then there was the fact that you could have two and they looked like your spouse for once! I also love how much personality the cast had - it got annoying that they said the same things in the same order every day, but they had so much to say that it didn't make a difference and I had fun raising everyone's hearts! Why do people say that the cast got flatter in AP...?
So, what do you like about the newer games? C:

I definatley agree with you on the AP part, I haven't played the others. I REALLY like AP! It is a very full game with great features. IoH: I liked that the charecters were Ok, and from my signature, I'm sure you can tell one of the charecters i liked. I liked the building bridge system, AND... It was my first harvestmoon! GrB: I liked the feature of selling at the bazzar, It was kindda fun. I liked the basement, and i really liked the farm sign board. The windmills were a nice feature. At first, The game was some Un-appealing to me, But it grew on me. So now i like it. I like the slow and friendly pace. The charecters are some bland, But i still kindda like them. The inventory was kind of annoying though, B/c there wasen't much room. ToTT: It was definatley differant from past games. I liked it. The addition of horse pulled carts was so cool! It really made it easyer to forge the mountain without the worry of a full inventory. (Unless your cart is full to, Which i haven't really havent had that problem yet.) The charecters are kindda cool. I like that you can dress your charecter. I like "2 towns" Feature, So i can choose the focus of my game, farming, or ranching. I move quite often, It is nice to experiance 2 differant casts of charecters in differant cultures. LoB: Don't have it yet, But it sounds intresting. Hope i get to try it. I hope it's good!

I like the wonderfuls introduced in IoH, but I like the way they were made available more in SI. I haven't played any of the Wii incarnations of the main HM series, but I love the RF ones. I really enjoy the anime styled cut-scenes in RFF and ToD and the voice acting in ToD.

Let me think:
- I like the art style and graphic in IoH/SI and ToTT - I like the japanese style of the town in ToTT - I liked to have more than one dogs in GrB and ToTT - I liked the bazaar idea in GrB - I liked saving the islands in SI - I liked when my spouse was cooking for me in SI - I liked to make friends with wild animals in Si and ToTT - I liked how my dogs and cats were helping me with taking care of my animals - I like some new festivals, like the crop festival, the mining festival (the islands), or the snow festival - I liked the jumping in GrB and ToTT - I like the different colored animals in SI, GrB and ToTT.
I haven't played MM, ToT and AP, but I trully like: - the silkworms in ToT/AP - training animals in AP - dating in AP - love letters in AP - having two children - children doing something more than staying at home.

So far, compared new to old I like LoB. The other ones are just...bleh.
The sprites just look poorly made(handheld) barely more detailed yet ...just ugly unless you see the character's portrait.
The consoles are only a tad bit better.. but, bleh. Older is better c:
Starting from newest I think Magical Melody and Magical Melody is one of my favorites >u<

I liked the little "dates" in ToTT, i'd love to see these put into more depth in future games, and i liked that there were two towns In AP, I liked having Finn follow me around! And i liked being able to change your clothes, being able to have 2 kids, and being able to change their clothes! I also really like having a bigger variety of crops and animals.

I like many things about the new Harvest Moon games, but if I had to focus on one, I would choose the fact that the developers are forced to come up with new and creative ideas for the series. It keeps people like us coming back time to time to play this addicting little game.

I wouldn't say they're forced, exactly- they could have made each game a clone of the last á la Pokémon and still had people coming back for more- but other than that, this.
