Some of the characters acknowledge that you don't use an umbrella.
Like Dr. Ayame, If you don't use you're umbrella she scolds you for not using one.
If you used the umbrella, she would just talk her usual dialogue outside.

I don't really know what it does but it doesn't keep the rain from getting you wet.
I bought one and regretted it, Especially that I always use my horse to go around.

Well, it not only increases your farm degree points, but different people like different styles of umbrellas, so I think it MIGHT make them happy if they see you with their favorite kind of umbreslla while out in the rain...

...but it's a total waste of cash >.>
