Every Season 13 - Animal Contest
This festival unlocks on Spring 31 of your first year, so your first chance to participate will be on Summer 13 of your first year. Afterwards the competition will occur on every 13th.
Talk to MC Stephanie between 10:00 and 13:00 in the Crossroads to enter the seasonal contest to have your livestock or poultry judged against three other fellow farmers. MC will give you the choice of difficulty level (Beginner, Veteran, Expert, or Legend, with each unlocking as you win the easier challenge) and then tell you what properties the contest judge will be looking at: Friendship, Coat, Byproduct Quality, and Byproduct Quantity. The Beginner difficulty will only judge on the number of hearts (friendship) you have with your animal, but the other difficulties will judge on friendship and a random property. The Legend difficulty judges on all four properties.
Any of your farm animals can be entered into the festival regardless of the season you are in. There isn't an animal-specific festival (such as a Moo-Moo Festival), so you can enter the same animal again and again if you wanted to. Your pets participate in a different festival.
The farm animal you enter into the festival will be competing against other similar animals. Your chicken will be judged against other chickens, your cows against other cows, and so on. You won't see a chicken go up against an alpaca.
Once the contest begins, Woofio the animal judge will look at each of the four competitors. Whichever one has the highest level of properties will be declared to be the overall winner. If you are declared the winner, you will raise your animal product brand for the animal that you submitted and win a prize based on the difficulty level you selected. You will also earn +1500 FP with the villagers as well as +3 AP with the marriage candidates. If you don't win, you'll still earn +500 FP and +1 AP.
For winning the Beginning rank you will receive a random item prize. For Veteran and higher you will receive the following prizes in sequential order:

Technical Details
Like many judgment festivals, this one is based on an invisible point scale. Your contest submission should be at the high end of the point range (or higher) to be the winner. For a Beginner rank, you will need to be between 50 and 150 points. For Veteran it is 151 to 400. Expert is 401 to 850, and Legend is 850 to 990. You'll earn points based on the farm animal properties that are being judged.
- The Friendship and Product Quantity are based on the same point scale. The more hearts and product productivity your animal has, the more points it earns. The point values are: 1 heart or 2 products will earn you 7 points, 2 hearts or 4 products is 12 points, 3 hearts or 6 products is 18 points, 4 hearts or 8 products is 26 points, 5 hearts or 10 products is 34 points, 6 hearts or 12 products is 44 points, 7 hearts or 14 products is 54 points, 8 hearts or 16 products is 64 points, 9 hearts or 18 products is 76 points, and 10 hearts or 20 products is between 90 and 100 points. You get points for half-heart levels too. For example, if you had a sheep with 5 hearts and 2 Product Quality, you will earn 34 + 7 = 41 points.
- The Fur and Quality Level are a simple rank between E (low) and S (high). For E level you'll earn between 0 and 22 points, D level is 23 to 34 points, C level is 39 to 54 points, B level is 59 to 76 points, A level is 82 to 90 points, and S level is 100 points. Some point values are skipped between levels (e.g., you won't earn 80 points). The amount of points you earn will be based on how close you are to reaching the next rank. For example, if your animal is at D level, but almost C level, then you'll earn closer to 34 points than 23 points.
You can also earn bonus points from the size of your animal, although it is not a judge category. An adult animal will earn a bonus +5 points, a mature animal will be +15 points, and a giant animal will be +30 points. You can increase the size of your animal by feeding it special feed.
The point values of the properties being judged will be added together for your total score.
I'm aware that the information given above from the guides doesn't make much sense; the values don't add up to achieve the point levels needed for victory. In theory, the number of wins you achieve could possibly be a multiplier that does have an effect on the animal's point value that puts it in the proper range for winning a particular rank. More testing is needed (e.g., can you win a Legend-rank with an animal that has never won a festival before).
