The tools you use on the farm are very important to your sucess. If you don't use your tools then you won't get anything done! When you start the game you're given a set of tools automatically. Each gender has the same basic tools but they do get a few others.

You can only have 1 tool equipped at a time (In HM2 you could have 2). To equip one of your tools, press the Select Button to bring up your system notebook and then press the A Button when the Tools selection has the arrow next to it.

There are 24 slots for the tools you may (or may not) receive in the game. The first "tool" is always the Hand. If you want to unequip a tool you'll have to select this. To select a tool just move the directional pad until you get to the tool you want, then select the A Button. If you want to verify what tool you have equipped while you're walking around, press the Start Button to bring up your summary window. You'll see the current date, time, day of week, and what tool you have equipped.

The tools is assigned to your A Button so when you want to use it just press A. Watch out how you use your tools though; you don't want to use the Sickle on your newly grown Corn plants!

The boy game gets upgrades to his basic tools (Sickle, Ax, Hoe, and Hammer). When you first receive the tools they're at level 1, but after you use them for a while the level will go up. You will have level 2 and level 3 tools. The more powerful the tool, the less you have to use it to accomplish its task. For example, a level 1 Hammer will take 6 uses to break up a large rock, but a level 2 Hammer will take 3 and a level 3 Hammer will only take 1. To use the stronger tool press and hold the A Button until you hear a chime; one chime for a level 2 and two chimes for a level 3. Then when your tool is powered up just release the A Button. The girl version of HM3 only gets the basic level 1 tools.
