I was half expecting RF5 to be shown in this direct and half not. While I was watching the direct and hoping they would show it, I kept saying, "Rune Factory 5! Rune Factory 5!" every time they were about to show another game. I still screamed when I saw the logo though, since I was still surprised lol.

I've watched both trailers several times, and it took a while for me to get used to the way the game looks, I didn't like how overly colorful everything was. But I've gotten used to it now and I think it'll grow on me. I think the game is looking really good in general though. When I saw the 2D portraits, I kept wondering why they look different from other anime style art. Then I realized that it's probably the shading, the shading seems like it fades out instead of being a straight edge like the typical anime style. I kind of like the different look they're going for. I'm excited to see more of the 2D portraits.

Also, I just noticed that Reinhard has long hair tied back into a ponytail. With the way his hair looks from the front I wasn't expecting him to have such long hair lol.

I'm really excited for Rune Factory 5. Guess that means I'll have to complete Rune Factory 4 Special soon!

Does anyone remember that if the Switch has Rune Factory 4 Special data we'll get something special/extra in Rune Factory 5? I wonder if that's still planned. Rune Factory 5 will be my first 3D Rune Factory game and it's bringing back 3D Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons memories.

Tbh out of all the games, 4 looked the least interesting to me before playing. I remember only buying it because I didn't have any other games to play. The world and characters didn't appeal to me like 3 did. Therefore, RF4 'looked' like a step back from its previous titles. However, after playing it past the long intro, the game really picks itself up and definitely becomes the most fun in the series.

I will say that for me personally, 4 didn't have the same sense of charm as the other games. Which, I think is due to the mc not having an iconic or tranquil home like the rest. You basically lived in a living room of a castle that has no back door. That being said, in RF5, having your farmland on the back of a dragon really intrigues me.

I like guides, but I actually didn't consult a guide at all when playing RF4, not until it came time to try to get married and I needed help figuring out events. (I think I also consulted a guide about some of the festivals, since I like to know what the exact conditions are for winning.) The first dungeon is super easy, particularly if you have Forte and/or animals along, and the story guides you a little more after that (finishing the dungeon is what really introduces the story properly, imo) so finishing the first dungeon and then knowing where to go after that is where I felt like I just clicked with everything.

Not that you need to try it again or anything, I just remember how lost I felt when I played it the first time, and then how much I loved it when I tried it again and charged ahead through the first dungeon, even though I didn't think I was ready for it :) It's like the game just magically scooped me up once the story properly got going, but before that I felt really disconnected, wondering why I was bothering to play it at all.

I don't think they'll show it at Tokyo Game Show, but I also didn't think they'd show RF5 in the Direct, so who knows? It'd be great if they did!

Kikki - Yes, that was a big reason I couldn't get into it. I honestly don't remember if I stuck it out to first dungeon area. I tend to prefer knowing or being able to figure out what I am supposed to be doing on my own and just checking for guides when I get stuck rather than having to use a guide the whole time. It sucks the fun out of it for me. Someday I may give it another try as the characters sounded very interesting, but probably not any time soon.

I liked RF2 because in many ways it seemed like a combo of Harvest Moon and Zelda. I played it up to the last dungeon, but had to end up dropping it because of being busy with other stuff irl at the time and going through some bad headaches that seemed to be intensified by having to use the lower/touch screen on the ds so much. I am glad developers have moved on from their touch screen obsession of the ds era, or maybe I am just more used to playing on the TV now? I guess that's another plus for this new game in my opinion.

When do you guys think we’ll start getting more info from the website / famitsu?

This is just a random stab in the dark, but maybe around Tokyo Game Show? That's coming soon.

How far did you get into RF4, greensara? The first time I played it, I didn't like it at all, because it gave me no direction and there was so much to do that I couldn't figure out what I was supposed to be doing, and I just quit, uninterested. (I had completed an RF game before...just the very first one...but even so, I felt like RF4 was too aimless.) I ended up picking it up a year later due to illness and loving it, but I had to get past the first dungeon and discover the second one before I really got into it, cuz then I had direction and felt like I knew what I was doing.

Mind you, I didn't like RF2 and abandoned it a little while after the generation shift, so my experience is obviously not predictive of yours, lol.

I don't want any potential older candidate to talk and talk about how old they are all the time either, UGH. (And when they are doubtless intended to be about ten years younger than I am, it's extra irritating, lol.)

You know what might be kind of cool? Even if the MCs have no customization, I'd love if they could give us two or three versions of them. Frey, for example. Let us choose a portrait that represents a 16-year-old Frey, or 25-year-old Frey. Or etc. Not drastically different, just with a few touches that show the shift in maturity. Well, that's a pipe dream that just came to me all of a sudden, not something I'm going to start petitioning for or anything. :)

After seeing the clip in the Direct Mini, I am actually curious about this game. I tried RF4 on the 3ds after liking RF2, but I didn't get very far before deciding RF4 wasn't my cup of tea. I am interested in finding out more about the characters, story, and mechanics before deciding about this one. Both of the protagonists have really nice designs, unlike the last female protagonist (at least her outfit), so that's promising.

To me it seems like a lot of things that use an anime style of artwork make everyone look super young, intentionally or not, but toning down the big eyes seems to help counter that. If the mainline games are any indicator, there will probably be a variety of ages in the candidates. I just hope if there's a mature one they won't be moping all the time about how much older they are.

Everything now is just hunches, but my hunch is that they will. Not that specifically, but I do think they'll have candidates that won't be available from the start, that you will have conditions to meet before they'll be available. I feel like they're using RF4 as the model for this game, more than any other game that came before it. (Which is okay with me, particularly for their comeback game.) I think we'll probably see a lot of things from RF4 make a return in RF5, just altered to suit the new setting.

Not exactly a prediction...just how I think about what little we know so far. And it is still very little. I hope they do still plan on releasing information in Famitsu...I'm greedy for more, now. Did they even bother with that for the FoMT remake? Or with Dragon Marked for Death or RF4S? I can't remember, now. Getting information out via Nintendo Direct was a first, when they did it last year. I know we eagerly awaited Famitsu's releases when Trio was upcoming, but I haven't seen scans from them being uploaded here since then, I don't think.

We won’t know for sure until we get more information.

It looks like Reinhard is a knight. So I’m guessing he’d be like Forte where you can add him to your party from the start?

At least we know it won't be like Tides/Oceans where Sonja only gets 4 candidates and Azel gets like, 8.

This didn’t make sense to me of why it was a thing but hey.

I believe Rune Factory follows the same sort of pattern as BokuMono. I remember looking at Famitsu information on news sites around the time Rune Factory 4 was first coming out. So we should be getting information steadily in Winter if the Japanese release is in Spring 2021. I don't know if Marvelous will want the game out for this fiscal year or next is the thing. Probably next if I had to hazard a guess? Which means we'd be looking at an April time window. Then there's the pandemic... So yeah, this game might be a late Spring title or could even bleed over into Summer if development gets difficult.

Although my predictions for the first candidate reveals are Reinhard and Priscilla if I had to guess. RF4 had 6 of each for a total of 12 candidates, which I felt was a good balance. But no clue if they're gonna stick with that tradition. At least we know it won't be like Tides/Oceans where Sonja only gets 4 candidates and Azel gets like, 8.

Ahhh the game looks awesome so far. Though I can’t help but wish for older candidates to woo and marry like iris in SoS. Not that I didn’t like Amber cuz she’s adorable but still.
