I feel the same way!! ;; Guides are so fun to use (that's why I'm on fogu in the first place haha), but there's always those moments when you're playing a game and get stuck, so you look it up and then later you're thinking "oh man I could have gotten that on my own!!" I know gifting is widely different from a puzzle in other games, since it's not meant to be a puzzle in the first place, but I feel like there's still all that satisfaction when you manage to discover something on your own!
I've been trying to make it a goal to use guides a lot less in games in general, but I'm such an impatient person I always give in.

TBH, there are enough festivals and events that gifting isn't really necessary, unless you want to really raise friendship FAST.
The love events still require a guide though. If anything, they are WORSE than they have ever been, since so many of them have prerequisite scenes you have to see with other characters. Even if you're stalking you're likely to not get the scene, because you haven't seen this or that other scene with a completely unrelated character. It's kind of maddening.
I've been trying to avoid excessive gifting for that exact reason. It feels like just walking around talking to everyone makes affection go up at a steady pace which I don't mind. But every time I get grow new crops my hands are just itchin' to go around and hand everyone it just to see their reactions!! I haven't even dipped my toes into the massive ocean that is trying to discover liked items for dishes, that'd take forever! And as Murasaki said, I definitely don't have time to play 24/7, or the want to, so after I get everyone's reactions to crops down I'll definitely be ending my goose chase there.
As for events, I'm surprised how some people even found them out!! The requirements are so wacky and specific. I just came to this game after playing Rune Factory 4 again and in that one it seems you get all the time in the world to activate events. Villagers will just stand in one spot forever until you go where they want you to go. So no, I'll kindly decline the part of me who wants to ignore guides to ever try to trigger some of the events without one. Each time I manage to see one without a guide I feel like the stars have aligned exactly for this miracle moment...
