So, now that a bunch of you have finished... How is Scarlet/Violet ranking on your guys' personal favourite Pokemon games scale?
It might be my favorite! The big thing to me was the variety of pokemon you could catch in story mode, and they weren't gated behind complicated endgame areas, days of the week, sounds you play on the radio, etc. They're just there! I like that you can see them too, so you can target the evolved forms and not fight a thousand geodudes the whole game (though, if you run over the crickets in your car as often as I did, you'll be fighting a lot of those). I liked having the new mythical pokemon storyline, I thought that was an interesting addition, though more as something else to do. I'm not usually the biggest fan of the extra content like the picnics and school classes, etc (I didn't attend any of the classes, though I know I'm missing out on
something... I did need to do some of the picnics and food-based bonuses, which I wasn't thrilled about). I thought the gym leaders had a lot of personality too, but I was mostly ambivalent on the story overall. They usually don't grab me, but it's not really why I'm there. Everything felt more fun in this version, other than I don't like exploring in 3D. That was a big hurdle for it to overcome, but it did!
I beat it last weekend, but I forgot to add my thoughts here! I liked pretty much everything about it, but wasn't into the end of the story.
Spoiler:
I drug my feet about finishing, but finally ran out of content to play that wasn't the end of the game. ^_^; I saved the psychic gym for last, and then did all three of the story-ending battles (Arven, Team Star, and the Elite 4). Arven's story was whatever, but Team Star's story made NO SENSE. It made even less sense after everything fell out in those last few scenes. ^_^; Again though, I'm not usually super-into the stories in these games, and Penny and the corny Hasta La Vistar sign-off might have been my favorite bits of the overall story.
The Elite Four test was fun! I answered Normal gym for toughest challenge. Like, legit, usually the normal fights are harder, but my partner and I were both obsessed with Larry. Just some businessman going to work and collecting a paycheck. We joke a lot that my partner hates work so much that he needs a worksona, and that he's normcore in public, so he felt Very Seen by Larry's inclusion. XD I LOST IT when Larry re-appeared in the elite 4, and thought perhaps they brought back whoever you answered was hardest in the test part. I had fun with this elite 4, unlike my trips through BDSP. I tried to use an all-killer lady party, though I was a bit paranoid about covering my bases, so I had to include a Garganacl I never gave up on, and I didn't wind up re-leveling a Gothitelle since I didn't pick her up until the end. Sad though, I didn't wind up using her in gen 5, and I really wanted to do an endgame party with her, but I'll probably use her when I go back and beat Violet.
I really disliked the story in the crater. ^_^; Like, a lot. But it was only a couple hours long, and was really the only thing about the game I didn't enjoy. My partner and I did enjoy the endgame differences between the versions. He beat it a day after me, and we were hollering back and forth between different rooms trying to sort out whether Arven had a mom or dad, whether dad was dressed like a caveman, yes of course mom was a robot, etc.
There's a few pokemon I still need to track down to complete the dex, but only about a dozen... not counting the Fuecoco evos, which I'm too lazy to do right now. I was torn on whether I wanted to complete it within the next week or so, but I'll probably replay this when they add content, and I'll enjoy completing the dex at the same time I can shift everything over to Pokemon Home.
