So I was deliberately not paying attention to RF4, initially because I thought the European release date was going to be WAY later than the US one, and then because it was announced that it wasn't going to be released here at all. BUT THEN. Miraculously XSEED announced the digital release etc etc

So now it's coming out in like under a week and I know nothing. Which is kind of nice, because I quite like going into games without a clear idea of what to expect. But with Harvest Moon/Rune Factory games, it's often quite useful to have a plan early on?? Or. There are usually some items that people recommend you save up or keep or whatever.

ANYWAY OKAY what I'm asking is... Do you have any tips for getting started in RF4? Any recommendations? Ahhh and I have no idea which bachelor I'll go for I FEEL SO UNPREPARED FOR THIS GAME I LOVE IT

I'm so happy more people are going to be able to play the game!

For tips:
1. Talk to everyone daily. There is an insane amount of characterization and hints you get through all of the character's dialogue. Also helps because you can pretty quickly get everyone's FP up to 3, which is level needed so that you can take them out to battle with you.

2. Keep up on Eliza's (the request box) requests. Very important that you do this, because it not only helps you unlock new seeds and items at the shops, but will give you your starting tools, and other important things.

3. If something is too hard to beat, it's usually an issue with your gear and weapons. It's incredibly important to keep them up to date. Keep up on your crafting!

4. You can tell if you've triggered a town event by going to your save spot next to your bed, if there is a "town event" section that means one is activated. Speaking of town events, check out Rune's thread where Ushian's helped compile info about the various town events. It's extremely helpful: http://www.fogu.com/hmforum/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=160204

5. Speaking of town events, they are random. It gets really infuriating because some of them are required to trigger before you can get married.

6. I hate plugging my own thread, but please read through the dating/marriage guide (there are no spoilers, so don't worry.) Dating and marriage are pretty complicated this time around, and it can get exceedingly frustrating for those who don't know what's going on. http://fogu.com/hmforum/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=159998 (also, I call them sub-events in the guide, but they are town events. Same thing, different name, sorry for the confusion!) If you need any help about dating/marriage or just want to chat about the romance stuff in general, please post in there! I try to keep an eye out for anyone that needs some help.

7. Doug cannot be married or even wooed (dating) until AFTER the 2nd arc is completed (you'll know it when it happens). You also can't have him join your party until then, so don't waste any gifts on him until after this point in the game.

8. You can harem in this game with no consequences.

9. Even getting characters to date is going to be random. Some of them will accept you at 7LP, but sometimes it's taken me all the way until 10LP before they will take my confession seriously. It's random ._. and infuriating at times.

10. If you have questions, most likely they've probably been answered in the Q/A thread, so try doing a quick search in there first. Or, just ask and you'll probably get a reply pretty quickly :D http://fogu.com/hmforum/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=159751

11. Arthur is the best husbando, true fact :p

Hope that helps! :D

Yeah, it was only just announced last week; it's coming out already this Thursday! I hope you enjoy it :D

It's no problem at all, glad to help! All of the guides (except the Q/A one) are sticked at the top of the forum if you ever need them. ^^

that's good to know. though maybe it's good that there isn't a lengthy guide, since I've noticed that I've kind of become dependent on them for the last couple HM games. I just always check instead of trying to find it out myself

Ahhhh thank you so much, so helpful! <3 Especially the advice concerning Arthur being the best husband yes thank you yes

I will be sure to come back to your reply and make use of all the guides you recommended when I'm a little closer to getting the game! I still want to keep it really ~fresh~ when I first play.

Soapy-chan! Long time no see!(I'm stuck as a fishy again since I lost my password and I'm too lazy to reset it)

I can give you a few tips that will help out. If you want to release the first 3 guardians really quickly, then I recommend taking Forte with you as you explore the dungeons. She's really strong and can solo the first boss for you if you let her, and the best part is you don't even have to raise her Friend Points at all to have her go with you. She can join you from the time you see her cutscene, but she will still leave you if it gets to late I think. If you plan on getting Leon quickly though, you'll want to do some lvling without Forte though, since you HAVE to do his dungeon solo without even the help of you monster pals.

Also after saving Leon, the first Arc will end and the second arc will begin a few days later. If you do NOT want this to happen either so you can train or you don't want Ventuswill out of commission for things like your wedding(she presides over your wedding, but ONLY if she's feeling well) then DO NOT EXIT TOWN BY GOING SOUTH FROM THE PLAZA. You can leave town any other way like taking the airship to where you want to go or warping, but as soon as you leave town by going south of the plaza you will start a forced cutscene and fight and Arc 2 will begin.

As for picking your spouse and getting married, most of the marriage candidates can be married within arc 1 once you've reached at least Autumn Road. However Leon, Doug, and Dolce can't be married until after you start the second arc. Doug as mentioned before can't even be wooed until AFTER you finish the second arc. For them, its will be a problem if you want Ventuswill to preside over your wedding as she will be unable to do so from the very start of the Arc 2 until the end of Arc 3, which could take you months or years to even activate since Arc 3 begins with a random event. If that doesn't bother at all though, feel free to get married at you leisure. If Venti isn't available, then Volkanon will preside over it instead.

And finally I'll let you in on a secret I discovered myself in the game, though it might be a while before you can exploit it. First, you have to get a guy to agree to start dating you. ANY dude will do, even if you don't plan to go after him. Once a guy has become your boyfriend, you can try to ask him out everyday using the BTW option while talking to him. Sometimes though, the option to go on a date will not appear at all. This usually happens if the next day would be the day before a scheduled festival(so a festival in 2 days). This will always happen so don't worry. What you want to do is to keep checking for this option and have it not come up when the next day ISN'T THE DAY BEFORE A FESTIVAL. If you can't choose to go on a date and a festival ISN'T happening in 2 days, then the next day A RANDOM EVENT IS SCHEDULED TO ACTIVATE INSTEAD. This can be EXTREMELY useful to know as the 3rd Arc of the game can only be started by its specific random event, so if you're trying to activate it(or any other random event you may want like a marriage event) then you can force the event to happen. Just save that night and start the next day and check what event activates. If you get the wrong event, or none at all(the game CAN pick an event you aren't able to do or already did, resulting in nothing happening that day), then simply reset and try again. If you want an event with a specific character and they have a high enough friendship with you to stay with you at night, then invite them, sleep and see if they tell you they have to leave for something the next morning, meaning you've started an event with them. If you invite Dylas and Amber with you and do this, you can quickly check for the event that will start the 3rd arc for you.

So if you want to have SOME control over random events, its a good idea to be dating someone so you can use this exploit.

Well, that's all the tips I have. I hope you enjoy the game as its really good.XD

Whoa fishy, I wish you could edit because even if you didn't intend to, there's some stuff in there that people might consider spoilery plot info even if vague, especially since Soapy and others kind of want to go into it blind/fresh.

@Ophelia - I agree, I think going into RF4 blind is going to be a good thing. We're always here if you need help of any kind :D

@Soapy - No problem! and yeah that's probably best idea, especially if you don't want to know anything and go into it super fresh :D Yes Arthur is #1 husbando no doubt. (Dylas is a close 2nd though ;p)

Sneeeaasel is that you?? HELLO. I skimmed over the plot-heavy stuff so not too much is given away to me straight away, but thank you very much! Once I'm further through the game I'm sure your info will come in handy.

Rope; From what I've seen, I'm kiiind of leaning towards Doug or Leon maybe?? But I always make my decision once I get to know them all a bit better anyway~

Sorry, I couldn't spoiler tag it so I tried to be vague while giving you a heads up on something that bummed a lot of people out since they didn't know about it.

And Leon is the bestest Husbando ever! He's a total troll king, and I think he has the most depth to him. Though his backstory throws some people off, I find it touching when you marry him. Makes me not wanna play as a guys since it would take away his happy ending.

I'M EXCITED. It's nice that you can date multiple people in this game, but I usually kind of test each guy out and then stick with one. Because even though they're video game characters, I feel bad if I'm like...a two-timing witch. How long did it generally take everyone to get married? I guess it depends on who you're going for?

speaking of dating: I've noticed something and haven't found an answer in any of the other topics. I'm playing as a girl and when I'm talking to the bachelorettes it gives me the option to tell them that I love them. is it possible to date both boys and girls at the same time?

It's completely random for everyone, because it depends on how long they take to 1. Accept your confession (you can confess at 7LP but they won't always take it. On my last file, Dylas took me until 10LP for him to accept my confession. Huge pain in the « Mr.Gourmet's hat » lol), 2. Have the certain sub-events/town events trigger that are needed for marriage. Every candidate has different sub-events that are needed to be completed first before marriage.. some people like Leon only have 1 prerequisite event, others like Meg have a whole slew of them. The only one that will take you longer to marry is Doug, because not only you have to be past the 2nd arc of the game before you can start raising his LP, but he also has prerequisite sub-events like all the other marriage candidates.

I've been able to marry during the first arc (only some of them can be married this early) of the game before, but that's rare. Most of the time it'll take you 2nd arc and later, but it's not a general rule. It just takes a lot of patience, and it's overly complicated imo.

No, it isn't. No same « Chicken Hugging » marriage or dating. The "I love you" thing is how you confess to people to get them to start dating you at 7LP. Otherwise you just get a silly dialogue with the people you can't marry on your character. Also, if you're married and you say it to someone, you'll get the jealousy dialogue.

Thank you! Good thing you linked me to your dating/marriage guide because wow okay yes that sounds kind of complicated. But I don't think I'm wanting to get married as soon as possible anyway. I'm just as interested in the plot etc.
