EDITS 8/13: The first picture was way too big. Fixed that. Also, adding a legend for those who can't read kanji.
EDITS 8/15: This is turning into a neat little Q&A. :) If anyone else has planting questions, feel free! I'll answer if I can, if not, maybe someone else will know?
EDIT 8/20: I have now purchased what Airin assures me is the final field upgrade and I will be posting the final graph in on Page Two of this thread tonight after work. Brace yourself, folks, it's enormous!
EDIT 8/20: Final diagram of main Konohana field is up! Onward to the rice paddies!
EDIT 9/4: After being distracted by real life, I return, with the ultimate condenser map on Page 3, and the first (?) rice paddy expansion (15 stone lumber, 25 wood lumber, 90k gold.)
Edit: 9/24: TinyPic has changed its rules and killed every diagram in this thread. I AM AWARE. D: I will fix them all when I get home from work.
 Here's my farm:
LEGEND: Greens indicate different crops. Reds and pinks are trees. Yellow is the house. Brown are the obstructions. Lavender is the barn and yard. Blue is the well.
 One of my favorite things about HM games is trying to figure out the most efficient ways to use the space I've been given to make a heck of a lot of money really fast.
:!: One great way is to buy seeds the year before and hide them in a box, then plant them as soon as you can- especially multi-harvest crops like cucumbers, strawberries, tomatoes, corn and sweet potatoes.
:lala: The new irrigation system should, presumably, make this a breeze- except I'm not quite sure I've maximized my efficiency yet. I want to be able to irrigate my farm so I can water the whole thing in as few trips as possible, so everything's planted in spirals. (I have a 30-square watering can, for now.)
:?: How are you handling yours?

Keep in mind that you also have some spots on the other side of the animal fence. That's where I plant the flowers I buy from kamil. I think you've maxxed out the efficiency. In my field I have a few leftover spots on the main field from trying to make one giant irrigation tube(?).
I do have a question, I haven't planted any trees yet, but do they take up a 3x3 plot or are they skinny trees that stay on one square?
The field on the western area of the house is ONE LARGE FIELD. I don't even know if I want to move to Konohana and get such a farm. So much space. xD I feel a little intimidated.
Takuya wrote:Take note, Irene can actually expand the field beside your house to approximately 4 or 5 times that size, yeah? Better get ready... ^^;
Thank « Harvest Goddess » for the irrigation system xD Cant imagine watering all that with a lvl 1 watering can.
I guess that's why I choose Bluebell over Konohana, though the thought of able to cook many different recipes using weird ingredients do tempt me
In Bluebell, I can only do Pudding for dessert menu *still without makers*
Seeing the grid is so complicated xD but good work!
I'm baffled how you are so patient in doing that
I'm currently planning my garden for max efficiency. Though I spend all my money the second I get it, so I usually can't afford too many seeds.
That being said, who knows how you can get the makers? I figure it's probably a quest, but whose?

Irene maybe? She's the "do it all" girl.
I just moved to Konohana and I cannot remember what I planted. It's like 1st row eggplants, 2+3 row ?, 4th row carrots, 5+6 row is flowers.
Okay, I got some more expansions, here is an update:
Legend: A is for apple tree C is for cherry tree F is for fertilizer G is for grape tree P is for peach tree T is for tea leaves
Numbers indicate the irrigation pattern I've concocted to max out my efficiency for a Level 6, 60 square watering can. Colors, for the most part, indicate the crops I've planted- they don't have any bearing on what's actually planted there, it's just so you can see where one section ends and another begins a bit better.
Two exceptions: White:Obstructions, like your house, your barnyard, the path, the water well, etc. Pale Yellow:Unused, plantable space that just didn't fit into my aesthetic/organization somehow.
Field expansions and makers are, as surmised, quests from Irene/Eileen/Airin (lol)! I have been trying to get all of them whenever I can; they can get a bit expensive and they don't always add as much space as one would hope.
I have added, this time, the spaces behind the barn so you can see them all. I have not included the rice paddy as mine is not maxed out yet and thus I find it irrelevant at the moment.
Trees do take up a 3x3 grid! Sometimes they yield 1 fruit, sometimes 2. It appears to be random.
I am using the seed maker and green fertilizer to attempt to up the level of my crops, and sometimes it goes quite well, sometimes not.
Green fertilizer increases quality by 1/2 star. One plant yields two bags of seed. I did not plant two apple trees on purpose. I just forgot that one of them was an apple tree, and I will probably replace it with an orange tree eventually.
Any other questions? Tips? Suggestions? Sarcastic commentary?

Ah, if you don't mind, exactly how does the fertilizer seem to work? Does it cover a whole irrigation line, or a square, or just a certain number of spaces?

One bottle of fertilizer takes care of an entire irrigation line, with no limits that I've noted in terms of number of spaces!
Once you've fertilized a perennial plant (tea, eggplants, sweet potatoes, strawberries, etc.) or a slow growth plant (soy, wheat, etc.), it's done, you don't have to re-fertilize those plants again, and you shouldn't, it's a waste of money. (Found that out the expensive way.)
Sounds great, right?
There are some catches, though.
Green fertilizer increases 1/2 star crops to 1 star, but once I've run the 1 star crop through the seed maker, green fertilizer appears to have no effect.
This is just in one season, though, I can't say what will happen next year. I'll keep you guys posted!
I have not yet figured out how to fertilize trees, or increase the ranking of a crop beyond 1 star.

Thanks for your question!
Dangit, I've been trying different ways to up the quality and I was hoping once I got the seed maker that would work!

Yeah, you and me both.
I should probably head over to some JP sites and see if they know anything we don't, but I really feel like I should be able to figure it out.
I will say, when Airin expanded my farm to include the makers, she did tell me it wasn't totally finished. The rice paddy doesn't quite work yet and the fermentation pot isn't in there, so maybe the seed maker can still be upgraded again? We'll see!
