What are they used for?
I know that giant crops offer extra cooking results when you use them on recipes, but what are golden crops special purposes?

I have collected some already and they don't even sell that much higher than their normal counterparts.

Gold crops get an extra 25 points added to your total over a non-gold crop for the harvest festival...more than a giant crop adds, and I believe they also get extra FP as gifts, especially on birthdays, if the non-gold crop is one of the liked/loved items. I saw it somewhere but I don't remember my source any more. :/

Meh.. Not that useful.
Maybe for high level harvest contests, since hardly anyone has a raw crop as loved/liked gift.

I wonder if foxes will love me more when I toss golden sweet potatoes to them.

Good for presents, making seeds (adds extra points) and cooking.

Just made a test with a golden giant crop on the seed maker and it added 20 points (!) to all attributes (except size, which was already maxed).
I still had the shield goddess statue affecting the maker, but I was impressed by how much the golden one increased quality, it may be the best stat to grow first on single-time harvest plants.

In my experience they've just randomly popped up.

I've gotten them on the vine ones when I've waited for those to grow full produce. Never before myself and haven't managed any other ones.

I think you can get golden crops occasionally by increasing the 'colour' quality of your crop as high as possible. That or it's totally random. I THINK only 'vine' crops can ever be golden. Tomatoes, cucumbers, sweet potatoes, watermelons...and I think a couple more. But I don't think anything else can go gold.

EDIT: You'll get more golden crops after you get a crop harvesting trophy but I'm not sure which one. (Source: Thonky.)

Well, I think that fruit trees, Cotton, Flowers and Tea can never be golden.
I have harvested a lot of these with maxed color and never got a golden one.

Only got golden vine plants so far, I have yet to see other plants becoming golden tho.

Thonky's item list suggests that vine crops are the only golden ones.

So do the crop cards - note Golden is only shown on the "special" crop cards (regrowing vines that have multiple possible harvest points).

Sweetness has nothing to do with it.
I had golden crops showing up with 10 sweetness vines.
