About Sumomo...

Like stated in the subject. I'm always wondering if Sumomo really work at Moriya's place for living. Like... doesn't she still a child? As the game also considered her as a child in Pumpkin Festival so I assumed she only around Tatsumi's age if not younger.

Then, doesn't that mean Moriya hires child labor? I known that she also goes for school and not work full-time at Raman's. Most of students do part-time aside school time in real life, that normal. But that do not make sense for a CHILD to do a part-time job for living right?

Maybe I'm taking the game too serious, but after 2 game years, Sumomo's situation still bother me like hell every time I visit Raman's. Worst, we don't able to know any of her family story in her friend event.

I think it's because the game is roughly set in time to what would be the early to mid 1800's in our world, due to the no electricity, hearths instead of stoves, etc. Back then it was extremely common in many countries for children as young as 5 or 6 to be employed in businesses as apprentices and in houses as either kitchen or house maids. Not saying I don't have an issue with kid labor, because kids need to just be kids, but it is historically accurate.

Sumomo's trying to support her family since I think
Spoiler:
her father died
And her family struggles with financial issues due to that incident.

And Moriya does hire kids to work; Hinata was hired by him at 13, and has worked there ever since.

by the beginning I was feeling more unconfortable by the fact that a pre-teen girl has a young adult dude as her roomie

I was curious about this so I made another thread about something I heard awhile back that could point to when the game takes place in: http://fogu.com/hmforum/viewtopic.php?f=32&t=172955

So, at the very least, this game is confirmed to take place after the first SoS game. The original SoS let you own a TV, so by the looks of it, it couldn't have taken place in the 1800s.

Then again, the Harvest Moon timeline in general is pretty broken so who knows. Shoutouts to how Harvest Moon DS takes place 100 years after A Wonderful Life, yet the AWL crew is in HMDS but haven't aged a single day.

Lol...yeah the fact that Hinata is her roommate made me more uncomfortable than her working at the store.I guess since this game supposedly takes place a long time ago it would have been acceptable for her to be working already. Her family also needs financial support as well so I guess that's why she's working there. But then again cars supposedly exist i n the game so I really don't understand what time period it even is supposed to be.

Judging by a comic that was official,SoS1 takes place before ToT since the ToT MC visits their farm in the beginning of the game.Actually,it would be around the same time period but why would there be no TVs in ToT then...It's really confusing.

You have to keep in mind that rules are different in different areas too. In my town you can be hired part time at 13 but have some restrictions on hours. In other areas of the world child labor is much more common. It would help if we had a better grasp on her age though since I'm not sure how old she even is.
She really cares about Moriya and seems to appreciate that anyone would hire her so I'd assume that, like Hinata, she needs the money.
I'm more worried about her crippling self doubt. She's such a smart girl but once she makes 1 tiny mistake she spirals down quickly.

This. It also made me feel uncomfortable beside the fact that Moriya hires child labor =..="

Reasons why it doesn't really bother me that much:

1. Child labor is common out in rural areas. I can't remember what age I was when I started to help out on the farm.
2. Yes, she is rooming with a guy, but that guy is Hinata. I don't think anything will happen. She probably reminds Hinata of his little sister. He just wouldn't do that to Sumomo.
3. Moriya, chances are he's watching those two like a hawk. There's no way anything's going to happen at his store. Well, besides Sumomo developing self esteem issues...

AT FIRST, I thought it was a little odd that Sumomo and Hinata were living together. But that was before I got to know Hinata. Like Lenna said, he'd never do anything to her. He's a sweet guy, practically her big brother, and is probably some much needed emotional support for Sumomo, who already has such low self-esteem even without Moriya treating her like a servant rather than an employee...

^ I also agree. Hinata has a lot of siblings after all, I'm sure he's used to dealing with children her age.

Regardless, I see their room as a dorm room like ones in boarding schools/camp (it's professional, they're not just living together because they want to) so it's never made me uncomfortable. I do see where you're coming from though. Hinata looks really young to me I often forget he's a grown man...

Why is it so wrong for Hinata and Sumomo to board together? He's great with kids, friendly, honest...I just don't understand. Just because he's a guy doesn't mean he's some sort of dangerous deadly axe murderer or something...

Gah! Thank you!

Moriya workes her hard and makes her nervous, enough so that she is constantly stressed out and can't do her job properly. She lives away from her family, and needs way more compassion and understanding then she's getting! I don't care if child labor is 'the norm' elsewhere this game is supposed to be idyllic and this sticks out to me!

If I could adopt her I would in a heartbeat.

Not sure what my opinion on the child labour side of things is, but regarding Hinata she's definitely too young to live alone. Maybe he's a trusted family friend who agreed to take care of her while she goes to school/works. I think it's a bit less creepy than if she roomed with Moriya… Maybe it'd be better if she and Hinata had separate bedrooms but hardly anyone seems to in this game anyways.

Edit: I remember reading something that said Hinata and Sumomo were both Moriya's apprentices. Hinata started his apprenticeship around 13 and is nearly finished it, but Sumomo started hers more recently so she's likely around 13. So the house in the back is just Moriya's boarding house for his current apprentices.
