(Oh my « Harvest Goddess » this is so long I'm so sorry)

So, I've been toying with the idea of writing a Harvest Moon creepypasta for a while now, since they seem to be all the rage these days (don't worry it won't be anything like Cupcakes {if you don't know what that is do NOT look it up}). I know this sounds kind of weird but in my opinion, every game is scary in some way, and I think it would be fun to explore the possibilities in a a game as innocuous as Harvest Moon.

Bottom line, I wanna know what you find creepy in the HM universe. It doesn't matter how stupid it sounds, I'd still love to hear what everyone thinks so I can get some ideas. So I'll start with stuff that creeps ME out-

AWL is probably the weirdest game in the franchise, which is one if the things that makes me love it so much. The way it handles subjects like death and loneliness is unrivaled by any other life simulation game I've ever played, so it goes without question that it's got an eerie atmosphere to say the least. Personally, I think the fact that there is so little music in the game really contributes to this fact. Outside your farm and the villagers homes, the only sound comes from nature; birds chirping and water flowing. This one of those things that's only creepy if you look at in a certain way. I for one usually find it calm and soothing, but I can't held but be reminded of the stories from the Slenderman Mythos and the Blair Witch project, where the all consuming presence of nature serves as a reminder of man's detachment from the outside world, causing feelings of uneasiness. While I'll admit this sounds pretty far fetched, the next thing I'll talk is a little more obvious. Those « Snuggly Bunny » sounds from the hill. I can't be the only one who gets creeped out by that sound, I can't be. It's just so weird, so out of place, I mean, it would have been eerie enough by itself- some enormous hill villagers disappear into during the day- but that sound is just frightening. You don't hear that kind of sound on sea level, you hear it when you're on top of a mountain. That sound gave me nightmares as a kid.

I've been playing a lot of RFF lately and I really enjoy it, but some things about it bother me. For one, the concept of forcing creatures to work for you kind of reminds me of some of the horror stories about Pokemon, in that it's something that seems morally questionable only when you overthink it, but morally questionable nonetheless. Personally, I think RF is even worse than Pokemon in that it outright tells you you killed something. In Pokemon, you just kind of assume that the wild Pokemon you defeat died, but in RF it's thrown in your face that you just killed an innocent creature. You literally watch them die. I always find this to be the most jarring in the cases of killing monsters that resemble animals in real life, like the chitters, wolves, woolies and buffamoos. Yeah they're hostile but jeez, wouldn't you be if people just showed up in your home and started hacking away at you? The sounds they make are the worst part by far, at least for me. It's like you can just hear their souls leaving their bodies as they give up.
The Silver Wolf is probably my favorite monster in the game (which makes it especially hard for me to kill) but I have noticed something kind of off about it; it's feet. They're enormous in comparison to its body, and they look almost human, which really, really puts me off for some reason.
Lastly, I have something that's mildly spoiler-ish for RFF, so if you want to it to be a surprise in-game please don't look
Spoiler:
I will never not be freaked out by that girl that shows up on New Years Eve. I get what they were trying to do, make something kind of like a ghost story, but what they did was SO much creepier. For those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about, I'll explain it. There's an old nun named Stella in the town who kind of acts like a mayor, pretty much just because she's older. On New Years Eve, and maybe other holidays I'm not sure, if you walk into a certain area in the map, you'll find a young girl. Keep in mind that her name when you speak to her is just "Girl". Immediately you'll notice that she looks like a much younger Stella. There's something really off about the way she looks, and that's probably just me, but still. For one thing I'm pretty sure she has the brightest eyes of anyone in the game, and I mean they're almost unnaturally bright. Secondly, her clothes are kind of odd. I know it's an RPG and everyone dresses like they just woke up with a hangover from a Halloween party, but something about her just looks weird. She's kind of wearing a shaw that makes her entire body kind look like a triangle, and she has a huge hood over her head. Bottom line, she looks kind of ghostly. And when you talk to her, oh « Harvest Goddess », she's says something along the lines of "So you're the only person living here?" Keep in mind that there a people literally within 10 feet of the two of you when she says this. She then goes on to say that she's always wanted to build a church in the area, and maybe even start a small village. If you leave and speak to the present day Stella, she'll tell you that when she first came to the area, there was only one boy living there. Ad if you come back, unsurprisingly, the girl is gone

I'M SORRY WHAT THE « Snuggly Bunny » WAS THAT?

The implications of this are freaking insane. Was there a time rift? Does some kind of bizarre anomaly happen every New Years Day? Does anyone else know? Does everyone know and they just don't tell you? Does Stella know? If the boy she saw was you why doesn't she recognize you? Is Raguna immortal? Theoretically speaking, it's impossible for one person to be in two places at one time, and if one is the to assume that the older Stella was the real Stella not the younger one then what.is.she? Stella's not dead so it's not a ghost. What does it mean to the player? Is it a result of Kano's experiments? Maybe Gelwein's? The possibilities are endless and I can't decide which one I like best!
So I hope I didn't bore or freak any of you out too much, and please feel free to share!
Just a fan

Speaking of RF, the Obsidian Mansion in Rune Factory 4 had legit jumpscares and was a riot to go through, let me tell you.

As for creepiness in the main games, in AWL I remember the winters in the game were positively eerie. All white and dead and somewhat foggy. It's been years since I played, but I remember during the first year some sort of creature appeared at my front door to remind me that I needed to water my trees before shrinking into nothingness >.>

Another creepy thing I can remember is in Grand Bazaar, if you go into Antoinette's house sometimes you'll just find Claude standing in the doorway of her bedroom watching her for long periods of time. I mean sure, they could have been talking or something, but still. It's a bit sketchy if you ask me.

In More Friends from Mineral Town, May will comment on Stu that she sometimes likes him and will sometimes hate him, and she'll say it with a smile on her face. Maybe it's because I find children creepy to begin with XD but it's kind of unsettling to hear such a nice little girl say something so harsh.

Fugue Forest in Animal Parade freaked me out the first time I went through it to meet the Witch. It was super dark and I didn't know how far I had to go and I thought I was going to have to knock myself out to get out. I seriously had an anxiety attack before reaching the Witch's house.

In various games, I've noticed that occasionally, the animations for exhaustion or hunger of the character you're playing makes it look like they're looking AT YOU and they're BEGGING YOU to feed them or let them rest. I find that to be the most creepy XD

Hope this helps!

The Obsidian Mansion isn't so bad. (Plot 2 spoilers below)
Spoiler:
Now, the ending of the second plot...
One, the music.
Two: Your best friend is dying. So you save her. (Plot 1) Plot 2: She's dying AGAIN. This time at the hands of the RF equivalent of Nazi Germany. So you get ahold of the MacGuffins, and go to kick Hitler's « Mr.Gourmet's hat ». Well, your BFF comes to help you! And then Hitler possesses her. So you have to defeat her to get him out. However, that would kill her, but if you don't do something, Hitler will raze the world and rule over the remains, so your friend is like, "Let me die." Bad enough...but then her body starts rotting halfway through the battle. THAT DARK GREEN THING WAS STILL ETHELWILL. YES. HER BODY WAS ROTTING.

I was pretty young when I played FoMT and MFoMT, and I was a scaredy-cat child, so certain things freaked me out pretty badly (in one case enough to HIDE THE GAME CART haha I was so weird)

-Carter's sermon about the man in the wheelchair. It's been ages, but I'll try to transcribe it the best I can...

Basically, before he was a... Minister? Priest? What is he? he lived in an apartment alone. His next door neighbors were a young couple, and the man was in a wheelchair. The woman left every day, but the man stayed. At first, Carter thought he was an artist or something, since he never seemed to move a lot. But one day, a fire broke out in the apartment, and Carter's a cool dude so he decided to save the wheelchair-bound man. He kept trying to move the man, but to no avail. Finally, thinking something was wrong with the wheels, he looked at the floor... And found white hands securing the man in place.

LIKE THE IMPLICATION IS THAT THE MAN BURNED TO DEATH THATS NOT VERY FRIENDLY
-also cliff "dying" was bad enough to scare me away from playing any more (but I got over it lol)
-Murray's situation in AWL is... Idk he always creeped me out a bit. Those big staring eyes, man. Also his habit of taking off his cardboard "shirt".
It's one of those things that's more weird if you think about it... This is a village of like 20 people tops. And yet there's a homeless dude. Really, no one could possibly spare some money to help him?? It's just weird.
-The implication that Daryl is watching your children. Euuuuch. That's a rare one that creeps me out more that I'm older. x_e
-In MM, the night time sound effects change based on what season you're in. Summer is cicadas, for example. But winter is just... Dead silence. It's a little jarring.
-Not intentional but the overworld sprites from RF1-RF3 are so ugly due to the limitations of the DS that they look... Deformed...

The mine in HMDS is terrifying. Where you battle cursed or undead animals and then eventually a replica of yourself, a farmer who did not make it out and all this time the people of the town and the mayor are aware of it.

And even worse, there's a girl at the bottom of it.

Also, that scientist in HMDS too. Creepin.

obligatory BtN's-wild-dogs-from-hell mention

Other notable ones were already mentioned, I think; Carter's story is a given (if I recall correctly, he also finishes his tale by shrieking, it's golden), AWL's Forget-Me-Not Valley is just creepy by itself... hmm. Personally, I never liked climbing the Mineral Town's Mother's Hill at night. I was sure those dogs lurk there and didn't feel like risking an encounter with them, plus it was so damn dark and silent and ughh. Especially in winter, when there was snow falling the darkness multiplied by 100 (or at least it seemed that way). There was also an event involving you going to the hill, losing consciousness and getting rescued by Gotz, who then proceeded to scream at you for being a careless little dumb lol, I think it occurred at his house, with no one else present, and only accompanied by the sounds of wind blowing outside. I dunno, that event left a big impression on me, the atmosphere was brilliant. The fact that it was in the dead of the night and you could almost feel the overwhelming coldness, AND the fact that, at least for Gotz, it was a so similar to the accident in which he lost his family, made it kind of unnerving.

The stuffed bear in AWL, when I was younger I'd get anxious just being in the same room as it. I don't recall it ever doing anything bad but it was still evil in my mind.

The fact that you can marry Kappa still strikes me as pretty weird too because the folklore surrounding kappa often involves drowning children and eating them, among other horrible things. You guys couldn't pick a nicer mythological creature?

They kind of explain this away in RF4 (no idea if this happened in the other games), I remember it being said that the monsters are trapped in that world and by killing them you're sending them back home or something?

Yeah man that story is craaaazy. It's up on youtube here btw. His last line makes it seem like he just made it all up though.

Yeah, this. I remember it was said right in the beginning of RF1 too (and I think in the other games as well, but I'm not 100% sure) that the world the characters live in is not the monsters' home and beating them up with your weapons and tools (they're blessed with a magic named Retornen/Tamitaya) sends them back to the Forest of Beginnings where they actually belong. What made you think it's thrown in your face that they died?

I always thought Gustafa's immortality was pretty weird. Like, how he didn't look a day older by the end of the game. And how tons of way older people outlived the MC, but that's weirder/lazier than creepy.
