to try foods from HM, SoS, RF, and other farm sim rpgs

Yep, this is a food topic thread from all our favorite farming sim series.

I'm curious to learn how cooked turnips would taste. And I want to try a chocolate version of dorayaki, which is the favorite food of SoS: FoMT's Brandon.

And a lot of the foods from RF4 sounds interesting to try, what is egg bowl, or fried skipjack?

Is roasted corn the same as corn on the cob, or boiled sweet corn?

Roasted corn on the cob is cooked either in the oven or on a barbecue or over a fire...sometimes left with the husk on to be peeled after cooking is complete...while boiled corn on the cob is fully husked and put in a pot of boiling water. Roasted caramelizes more. Both are very tasty, but roasting needs more attention and has more nuance to the flavour. IRL you'd usually put something on your roasted corn cob before cooking it, like seasoned/herb butter.

Turnips are...well, I don't really like them much. If you cook them soft, they can be mashed like a potato, but they're wetter, like a carrot or a parsnip. They have an earthier flavour than potatoes. (But my sister once tricked my bro-in-law, who hates almost all vegetables other than potatoes, by mixing turnips into his mashed potatoes. He couldn't tell until he took a bite, and then it looked like his face would turn inside-out, lol.) I prefer turnips cubed up and roasted rather than boiled and mashed, for sure.

I don't know what egg bowl is for sure...I'd need to see the in-game page on it...but at home I often make fried eggs over rice. Very tasty. And at my house it's just buttered rice with some fried eggs served on top, and seasoned salt and pepper.

Skipjack is a type of tuna, so it's just fried tuna.

There aren't really many foods that I want to try that I haven't actually already tried, lol. Everyone in my family is a pretty good cook, so we've made just about everything we like the sound of, unless the ingredients are not available to us in this country town.

Kikki, what is your opinion on the dorayaki? Is it a Japanese dessert, and could chocolate cram-spread be used to replace the red bean paste?

I don't know where in the US, to find that.

Do you have access to an Asian grocery store, like T & T Supermarket? You could probably find dorayaki there, and if you didn't, you definitely can get red bean paste there. Red bean paste doesn't appeal to the average Western palate (though it just tastes a bit odd, in my books, not particularly offensive...I'll probably never really like it, but I don't hate it, either. It's kinda blah and the texture is meh, to me, like pureeing a can of plain, skinless beans with a bunch of sugar) Any kind of chocolate spread would be nothing like red bean paste, but you could try it, I'm sure it'd taste good. Dorayaki is...kind of like a pancake sandwich, with the pancakes being a less fluffy, but sweeter and a more eggy version, which produces a denser, chewier pancake, almost like something between a pancake and a crepe. Take two small pancakes, spread them with red bean paste, and clap 'em together, and you pretty much have dorayaki.

You can order dorayaki on amazon.com, btw. Red bean paste can be bought there, too, if you want to try making your own pancakes and using purchased spread. (I'd consider red bean paste a hassle to make, even though the process is simple, it'd be a bit time consuming to get all the skin out and cook it down to a thick paste.)

This recipe is quite easy to follow, and if you can't get red bean paste at an Asian mart or online, you could certainly have a go with Nutella. Most Westerners would probably prefer the Nutella, but it's definitely nothing like red bean paste in texture or flavour.

Hmm, using a chocolate flavored nutella as a substitute sounds like a good idea. I wouldn't mind making an Americanized dorayaki.

I really like red bean paste myself. (Tbh I like almost all of the Japanese sweets I've tried, which isn't a lot, but the only ones I can think of that I didn't like are the other flavors of Mochi. It's just really really good.)

I've also had sesame balls from a Thai restaurant which have red bean paste inside them and are maybe a little fried on the outside and sesame seeds all over the outside and are really really good, and I highly recommend trying them if you can get some good ones.

I also like just about anything strawberry flavored when it comes to Japanese sweets. Tbh I find I tend to prefer Asian food over "American food" and while I do like a fair amount of that (I like pizza and ravioli If that counts) I'd rather have chickpeas for breakfast over cereal or pancakes or, I dunno, sausages (made vegetarian because I can't eat meat) or whatever. And I grew up on lebanese food as a toddler so I really like that, but have very particular standards for the taste of the food that are very difficult to meet if they aren't the One Specific Restaraunt I like, so it's really hard to get that. It's just. Never good enough, especially homemade. It's impossible for me to get it right. Not unless I go to one of two restauraunts.

I think about mashed potatoes or burgers or whatever and it just doesn't sound that great. I'll eat mashed potatoes but I'll never get excited about them, and burgers are just gross to me, no matter what they've got on them. I usually find myself going hungry whenever people insist on having a bunch of that kind of food because I just. Don't really like it.

I never get very much to eat at a barbeque or a potluck or a special dinner unless there's maybe some cheese pizza or something I actually like. Usually a few chips And maybe some dessert, and some bread if I'm lucky and that's about it most of the time. And I really like spicy food. If they had some good Indian food I could eat I would be very happy but nobody ever does.

The main alternative to red bean paste I’ve seen for dorayaki (and taiyaki, etc) is actually vanilla custard. It’s delicious, especially served warm. Different flavor profile but it’s still considered a common and popular variation. Specialty flavors might include matcha cream, strawberry mascarpone, etc... idk if I’ve ever seen chocolate but that should taste good too.

“Egg bowl” is maybe egg-over-rice, where you crack a raw egg over piping hot rice and mix it together with chopsticks, with the addition of some soy sauce and condiments like sesame seeds, nori or chopped scallions for seasoning. The heat from the rice should warm up the egg without scrambling it—some people find the idea of “raw egg” gross, but once I actually tried it I found it to be ridiculously addictive when it has lots of scallions added to it. It’s creamy and savory like carbonara sauce. But the rice needs to be extra hot. If you’re curious, but paranoid about the raw egg thing you can pop it in the microwave for 15-30 seconds before eating and it should still taste fine.

The other kind of egg bowl would be lightly beaten eggs (and usually thinly sliced onions) simmered in broth with soy sauce and a pinch of sugar, served over rice. It’s oyako-don without the chicken, and gyudon/beef bowls are prepared this way too. Dashi is the preferred broth to use but it’s ok to use chicken if that’s all you have. It’s also tasty but a little more work to prepare— the onions have to be cooking long enough in the broth to turn soft, and eggs are added at the last minute so they don’t overcook.

I could easily love the recipes from HW OW's Halo Halo. Grilled Fish with a mug of freshly brewed coffee.
