Is there a way to stop the gauge turning red in Mystic Valley?

I need to get a certain amount of Seema (which is what he names though the guide says char) to get beans to progress. However, the gauge for the line keeps going red too fast, threatening to snap before I have made enough reels. Then when I stop to let it go down, the fish swims away forcing me to tug and when I can reel again it turns red fast. Is there a way to stop the red or have enough time to reel?
