Workshop - Item Size

Alright, well in all the recipes for cooking I've had so far they always use "Small" items (Small Milk, Small Egg, etc.). Then today I was taking a lesson and Mana used a Small Yarn Ball and a Medium Yarn Ball in the same recipe.
Do I actually have to use Small ingredients when they ask for Small? In RF1 they said small, but you could use any kind. That'd be a SERIOUS pain in the neck, I'd have to re-catch all the harvest animals and keep each one and at a specific FP... so maybe it's only with accessories?
