Messhina Valley? That's the area on the left, with Trieste Forest to the right and the Padova Mountains up ahead. It's one of the four main monster infested areas. It's not the Japanese name...

Messhina and Palermo are places in Italy. Except Messhina is spelt Messina.

the same goes for Trieste, Padova and Blessia that's probably a reference to Brescia (I guess the translators didn't get the reference and translated it differently and the same goes for Messhina/Messina.
All the dungeons (and Palermo) are named after places in Italy. And I guess the name Alvarna too, there is a mountain named Alverna in Italy. In RFF, Alvarna was translated to Alverna.
