Can you take them back to your barn as pets?! Or do they stay boringly on their island, seeding off of your generosity and food? D: i want some to come home with meee.

You can't take them to the barn. Sorry :/

If you feed them, they will be friendly to you and help you.

Help you with what? Do they give you sun stones?

And what determines which animals show up? Do they have to be unlocked?

Help with various things, depend on which animals group

Monkeys: Collecting Materials (Lumbers, stone branches, Golden Lumber)
Ducks: Fishing (Fish, Treasure, Fossil)
Mice: Mining (Ores, Gems, Diamonds)
Sparrows: Wild items (Bamboo Shoot, Urchin)
Rabbits: Seasonal/Out of Seasons Flowers (You can only get Firefly flower by rabbit's help)
Raccoons: Seasonal/Out of Seasons Wild Grasses

You only need to unlock the animal island, and then left a food in the box available there
Certain foods can attract 2-3 kinds of animals, like Fish can attract both duck and raccoon
but fodder which you can buy from Mirabelle only attract one kind depends on which animals fodder you put

More hearts you have with certain wild animal groups, more animals will join to help you

After they have 3 hearts with you, you can ask for their help by leaving a food first, then talk to the red sprite
You also need to talk with him to get the animal's loot

You're unable to bring them home and keep it
but you can see them, pick them and show them to townspeople when they're working in town/any area with townspeople in it

You can't bring them to leave their current working map

There are no frogs & turtles?

im super pumped about the furry woodland creatures helping u out. but i thought they could live at your farm oh well.

Too bad there is no ferrets and sugar gliders. They are much cuter than some monkeys or over-used bunnies
