I'm not sure I'd like a bigger, more complex plot...

But I'd like sub-plots of various complexities. Things that focus on the villagers and the village and stuff.

Likewise, I would'nt want so much to be wooed (well, maybe a little. But I'd want, for gaming reasons, the main pursuit to be yours). But I'd like to be able to woo people in more interesting ways. Right now, it's just all about the monotonous present-giving. Like... Maybe you can go do stuff with them, or sometimes they'll ask you to hang out (but only for maybe an hour or so), and stuff. In addition to the big, standard heart-like 'required for marriage' events.

And, in addition, I'd like there to be more random scenes (some, I'd imagine, interlinked with sub-plots, or with current affection levels, or previous events seen), and maybe sometimes during those scenes you could get an opportunity to raise (or lower) affection levels by doing/saying something. And this should be with all villagers, not just spouses.

In my opinion, there isn't much that needs to be changed. I'm boring like that. XD

more ideas:

the ability to unlock places from other harvest moons, not by connecting to them. like, if you ship a certain amount of an item or have a certain amount of animals, you unlock a new place.
also, the bachelors and bachelorettes in that town will be available for marriage. and you can marry off the rival couples in that town and they can have children of their own

more animals and crops! maybe, after you unlock a town, you can go to the stores there and buy new kinds of seeds and animals, the more towns you unlock, the more exotic those crops and animals become.
like, the town you start off in has chickens, cows, and sheep and the basic crops [turnips, potatoes, corn etc.] and the first town you unlock will have ducks and goats and things like flowers and herbs. and so on and so forth

i like in MM that you could buy so many pieces of land to farm on, and in DS you could have as many barns and coops as you wished and put them where ever you wanted. if these two features were combined, it would be a complete win

Well, you can have land in a variety of places in MM and a lot of barns in DS
I would have so much stuff in one area it would be like another town.

just a massive cluster of barns and coops in one area surrounded by grass
like a mini town for cows and chickens
i will name one chicken Thomas and she shall be mayor!!

Don't know if its been said yet but more creative ways to woo the guys and girls. Instead of just giving them gifts. Examples-

Maria-Read at the library,catch bugs
Ann- Raise lots of aminals!! Win the horse race
Elli- COOK & EAT
Popuri- Grow flowers
Karen- Drink her under the table
Harris- Read your mail
Gray- Win the horse race
Jeff- COOK&FISH
Kai- Drink wine
Cliff- You should be able to HUNT
Rick- Mine
