I am planning on getting HM: Sunshine Islands, but I never played Island of happiness. Do you need to play Island of happiness to understand sunshine islands?
No. It has mostly the same cast, but it happens on a different set of islands and has a totally different plot and whatnot. In fact, I'd recommend SI even to people who weren't interested in IoH because of the many improvements.
Yes, it still has the sun/water points but from all accounts having successful harvests seems a little easier- Syvle theorized it might be because the weather system seems more stable. This is all secondhand knowledge, of course.

i kinda like that its always different and never a continuing story. harvest moon can be as long as you want already. so if it was a continuing story it would get old pretty fast.
although in a way they do continue each game a bit like with harvest moon DS (cute) where was that bolder that had the name of your old farmer (who had by then passed away a long time ago)<- i think you had to have (M)FoMT though
