Naaaaah, not really. Consider the fact that you earn 100 for catching a fish king, 500 for placing 3rd in the fishing contest, 700 for second, and 1000 for first.

Taking that into consideration it is rather easy indeed to amass over 3000. Is there a mining contest that grants the same or a greater amount of points as a prize?

Yeah, the 500= 3rd, 700= 2nd, 1000= 1st seems to be true for each festival and its respective farm degree point category.
