Shouldn't her proper name be Potpourri? Why is it Popuri in the game? Don't tell me this is another of those spelling errors by Natsume?

It can't be a spelling error if it's been Popuri in like every game xD I would hope Natsume wouldn't be so dumb.

Since it's the name of a video game character, there's no reason why it should be an existing English word.

No you see the reason why I came to such a conclusion is, Popuri, her mother Lillia and Basil were supposed to be the flower selling family in HM64 so their names were supposed to reflect certain flowers and plants.
Lillia is obviously a real name based on the root word lily. While Basil is basil.
There's no such flower name as Popuri unless you're talking about the name based on the dried flower and spices mix called Potpourri. Indeed, Potpourri is pronounced the same way as how you would pronounce Popuri [poh-poo-ree, poh-poo-ree] The T being silent.
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/potpourri Which leads me to believe that Popuri's name might have been a result of translating the sound directly from the Japanese name. I mean after the first game was published (HM64 or BTN?), you can't expect them to change the name even if they found out it was wrong for the sake of continuity can you?
You know I wouldn't be surprised if I were you. Just reading Mana's sentences and "Have you ready Basil's books" gives me a headache.

i think that it is misspelled to sound more like a name. potpourri isn't a very nice name, but popuri is.

I've never played 64 so I didn't know that, but from my knowledge of FoMT,
Basil is Mary's father.

Basil isn't Mary's father in HM64.
In fact, Thomas is Mar[ia]'s father in HM64 :D

Did they switch up the families intentionally or is that just a mistake in the programming?

Well HM64 was first. Then they changed everyone's families and personalities around to make it seem more fresh and new, but I assume they were just lazy xD Mineral Town is just HM64 revamped ...in a not good way, I hear.
