You need a Level 2 House. This can be attained from Dale the Carpenter. You need 100 Lumber and 100 Material Stone and you'll have to pay 25,000 G for it. You also need a blue feather. Either Mira will inform you about the blue feather after your person is at 9 hearts or you can go talk to Hamilton and he'll tell you about the blue feather. To get the feather, you need to go to floor 45 of the Garmon Upper Mine between 5:00 pm and 7:00 pm and head to the summit. You should get the feather then.

And then you use the feather to propose.

I really wish they'd make a bank in the games. That way, you can save money and not accidentally spend it all when you're trying to save up for something.

That'd be really clever actually. Never thought of it before.

Ugh. Simon's shop hasn't upgraded ONCE yet, and I've been collecting all the mushrooms and forage items I've seen since I started playing the game. (It's now Summer 14th of year 2)

Is there any particular kind of easy food item I can sell to help the upgrade come faster?

You can cook - if you mix crops and animal products in recipe, it ships into "other" category - which you need for Simon upgrade. Something like Ice cream, Strawberry Milk, corn soup, sandwiches, bread, fried rice - all will count.

Ask your family to "pick up" as help - it goes into "other" as well.

Not easy, but faster way - I had all shops upgraded, but Simons, and it annoyed me. So I decided to look through all cooking recipes to find something that profitable that can be cooked and shipped with store bought ingredients.
The one I went with is Egg sandwich - I bought wheat from Marimba farm; decent sheep milk, decent chicken eggs, decent sheep butter and decent mayo from Horn ranch. For each sandwich, I spent 1010 gold (less if you wish to buy eggs and convert to mayo and milk to convert to butter) - it ships for about 1400 gold (1398 or something like that) - so it's nice chunk of profit.
The downside - you have to mill Wheat into flour first, than make bread, boil eggs and finally make Egg sandwich.
But I did 100 at the time, with breaks in between, it is do-able (140k shipment, 40k clear profit), and Simon upgraded after 3 shipments for me (depends how much you shipped before that)

Well I have a cow and duck so that cuts the milk and eggs out of the shopping list.

Also, does asking my hubby to pick up stuff take away from my foraging, or does he magically find stuff to ship?

Bird Feed?

I've played almost a year now but I still don't know if it's possible to make your own Bird Feed. I know you can make fodder... as far as I've seen, I can't make Bird Feed, but please tell me if I am wrong :lala: :?:

You cannot make your own bird feed. That is probably why it only costs 10G instead of 20G like fodder.
