Confused about fishing~

Sorry if this is redundant, but I have a question about fishing.
I've only been catching cans, boots, small fish, ect (nothing amazing)
When do I start catching medium and large fish? I'm curious because I'm currently in the middle of summer and the fishing festival is coming up! Help is greatly appreciated

well, you need 15001 fishing points to catch a pirate treasure, so i supposed you also need a certain quantity of points to start catching better things

From Freyashawk's guide:

...but you probably will not be able to catch a Medium Fish until you have caught at least 500 Fish (and/or other items). You will not be able to catch a Large Fish until you have caught 1000 Fish (and/or other items).
