Some beginners questions

Hey, I just got FoMT for the first time yesterday. I've played other games (STH, ToT, MM, AP) but this one is new to me and I have some very basic questions for anyone that has a minute. Any general tips would also be appreciated!
1. Can you plant crops in the rain?
2. Do you have to feed your horse?
3. Does just talking to people raise their heart level?
4. Can you work in the rain or at night without losing extra stamina?
5. I understand that you have to raise the sprites' heart levels to get them to help, but how many of them do you really need to help? For example, if I have 4 crops (9 plants each), how many sprites do I need to employ to make sure all of them get watered?
I am REALLY excited to embark on this new Harvest Moon and I would love to hear anyone's input on starting off on the right foot!

This is my favorite game ever. C:
1. Yes, no problem.
2. Nope.
3. Perhaps, not by much though, most of the villagers like eggs/flowers/chocolate
4. Nope, rain you lose extra, if you stay up late, you wake up late.
5. They gain experience the more they work. I have two at top experience watering 3/4 of my field. Just give them all flour. They like that.
Tips?
Chop wood in your spare time, collect herbs everyday, buy a bigger backpack asap, and a basket when you can (It's not necessary).
Check for events that you might miss on your first year.

Check out events in year one,
Not all may be available since that's the female versions.

4. In the rain, you normally would lose extra stamina and gain extra fatigue, but with the special blue power berry, that won't happen. I'm not sure about aat night, after 8pm though, and whether or not the blue berry will have an effect.

For me I gave the sprite bread and they really liked that except for the purple sprite. I don't think I have ever used the purple sprite.
Just be sure to find power berries and if you are tired at night (Fatiqued) before you go to bed you will wake up at 8 instead of 6 in the morning. Keep that in mind.

Thanks for the help everyone!
Also, is rival marriage connected with the heart level you get the rivals to?
Do sprites' heart levels go down if they work too much?

The rival marriage will happen as long as you haven't married the girl he's wooing.
Once you're done seeing a heart event, the next time they're in a scene together
it will resemble the next heart event. The hm fomt guide tells you when and where
to be to see them happen.
If you want to see their wedding, try becoming friends with the rivals, then
you should be invited. But you can stumble on them apparently, after the 4th
heart event is seen. It's in year 4, I'm pretty sure.
The sprites' heart levels will go down if you just make them work constantly and stop giving them
gifts or anything else.

Can someone tell me how the basket works? Thanks again!

Drop things into the basket, I think it's up to thirty. Then lift it and 'drop' it into the shipment bin.
@harvestmoonk999- I NEVER USE THE PURPLE ONE EITHER.

Is it true you can leave the basket places and then pick it up later?

Yep.
And if you leave it somewhere and forget to bring it back,
it always pops back up in front of your house when you wake up.

It does? When I leave it someplace it just stays there.
And give the sprites flour to raise their hearts, they all like it, even the purple one. If they work alot, yes, they will lose friendship, which is why I give them gifts everday.

Yeah, I just checked it before. Sorry.
Although I could have sworn it reappeared one time I lost it. Ah well~
Just be careful when you're in the mines. If you're surrounded by a bunch of
ores and can't move, then put the basket on the stairs, get rid of one ore so
you could move, and then take the basket off.

Also good to know; on mondays, wednesdays and fridays (or any day that it's raining) you can go to the church between 1 PM and 4 PM and go to the confession. When you confess to something, there's a chance you will be forgiven, and the effects are varied and useful.
For example, if you confess to overworking the HS, then you have a chance to have the harvest sprites' affection all raised a bit.

You can save before going into the room, and if you're not forgiven, you can just reload and keep trying. It also works when it's snowing, since the majority of the days in Winter have snowy weather, you can confess a lot in Winter.
