Why can I not take my horse off the farm? Whats the point?

Well this is one of the earlier games, so taking your horse off the farm hadn't really been thought of or implemented yet.

It sure would make things easier, because you would be able to get around the town very easily, and since the horse is a portable shipping bin, you could forage much easily.
