I know there's multiplayer in the game, but can you play with a friend in the same room just with a regular wireless connection?

The Japanese version supports DS Wifi and Local Wireless. There is no word on if the English version will have the same features.

Is there even any word that this will be released in America?

You can assume that it'll be out in English, but there isn't any information on a release date.
