Yeah, it's kind of racist (or just really ignorant) in itself to say that Won's portrayal isn't a racist stereotype. And it's not any more or less okay than other stereotypes. It just is.
It bothers me that some characters HAVE to be like "ching chong I make good bargain smell of ancestors panda panda young grasshopper" or "geisha onigiri sukiyaki ninja samurai!! KAWAII!!" to be seen as recognizably Asian.

I can see why Natsume would make the changes. I ultimately don't care since the sprite still looks cute.
Honestly though, the games are meant for the Japanese audience so I would assume they don't have to worry about the stereotypes they put in would offend anyone. It could be worse though, like Hetalia /shudders

The stereotype that gourmet's are fat. Or anybody whom loves food really is fat. @_@; It's untrue.
And what isn't wrong about Won? He's a Chinese sales man that tries to rip you off constantly. Albeit I love him, but I won't deny it's pretty freaking racist. xD

Too be honest, what I've seen some from stereotypes, Hetalia isn't that bad. >.>

@Icy: rofl, that response was so funny. 8D
Yeah, Won was so stereotyped, I didn't even like him as a child.

Stereotypes are DNW for child Kim.

I've read a good portion of the manga.
The only country Hidekazu doesn't portray negatively is Japan, his country. I stopped following APH when I got to the strips about Korea raping people. Seriously, how hypocritical is it for someone to portray a group of people as rapists and those who take things by force when they were the ones being put in death camps, put into slavery and had their villages pillaged and destroyed by the other country. But again, most Japanese people are ignorant to what the Japanese military's atrocities were in WWII so it possibly it isn't all his fault although he claims to have history...
But back on topic, I honestly found Won funny /shame. I think it's because of where I live everyone is desensitized to Chinese stereotypes where it's pretty much daily humor.

I've watched enough anime and South Park that I like to think I'm immune to taking offense at racist caricatures.
That being said, I live and work with Mexicans, and I thought the Ucho brothers were cute and funny before, and they're still cute, but not as funny. The only problem I have with the change is the mustaches looking smaller. As one of my friends from work said when I discussed this with her "if they don't have the big brochas, they're not real Mexicans!"
I'm still convinced the change was more for the sake of the white soccer mom crowd than anything else. I asked all of my friends if they found the 'Uchos offensive, and they all said "no". Like me, they found them cute and funny, and many of them seemed to think it was cool that there are Mexicans in the game at all, regardless of how they look. They might have been more offended if they were day laborers instead of merchants, but I doubt it.
Wow, this post turned out to be longer than I planned.

Trust me, the Koreans weren't pleased with their portrayal either.
I liked their mustaches bigger too. >_>

I know. Being Korean myself, I threw a fit also D':
Mmm, now that I look at the sprites again I like the original one more. The rosey cheeks and bigger mustache is adorable.

I miss Mucho's teeth most of all, for some reason
And despite stereotypical appearance, they were still pretty cool characters.

If you think about it, a lot of the darker-toned characters in games are kind of stereotypical, too.
Such as Kai, who has a reputation of being a bit of a playboy. And Dan from Magical Melody has a relatively similar personality, as well.
Harvest Moon is riddled with stereotypes, though, not only racist ones. We have the nerd stereotype, Muffy is a blond stereotype, Ann is a redheaded tomboy stereotype (she has a temper on her, stereotypical redhead)...let's just face it, Harvest Moon is riddled with stereotypes (to fulfill everyone's 'kinks' I guess we can say), but some are more offensive than others, specifically when it comes to race (ie, Won and...uh...these guys).
Personally, I'm glad they made the change, though I'm not exactly supportive of people who whine and complain about that stuff because I know it's just a game. I'm not one of them. I support it though because we all know there's going to be one parent out there who'll get upset by it, and complain, and set off a chain of annoyances.
Might as well bite it in the bud. Americans stress a lot on PC, the Japanese...noooot so much.

D:! I don't blame you. I only liked Korea when he wasn't raping people.
Yeah, HM is filled with the stereotypes, but most people don't seem to be bothered with them unless they are affiliated with race.

Probably because the U.S is becoming more mixed people feel its better to be PC to not offend anyone or perpetuate stereotypes. And as said before by other posters, its probably the over protective soccer mom that is going to get upset over the stereotypes. Most children won't even notice it or read any sort of stereotypes into it (not sure how kids in the U.S are though...) and the older audiences that play it probably just have a laugh at it.

My post disappeared...
I'm bi and I remember laughing really hard at a gay joke and my straight friend was all "...How can you even laugh at that instead of being horribly offended?" I sort of think that's what's going on. Like, it seems the closer you are to a group, the less likely you are to be offended by a joke, unless it's something like "Why did the woman cross the road? TO BE COMPLETELY SERVILE TO THE HIGHER « Chicken Hugging »" or "You know what's fun about gays? BURNING THEM."
/this is so off topic lolz
BACK ON TOPIC. I love their little eyes.

That's in poor taste. You can make fun of every single country but your own? I love it when they make fun of Americans, but you have to do it fairly.
But again, most Japanese people are ignorant to what the Japanese military's atrocities were in WWII so it possibly it isn't all his fault although he claims to have history...
Americans are just as bad. :D Look at the Philippines.
I am glad they changed it. The appearance they had seemed too close to what Western civilization believes to be factual about a Mexican. Also, the big red nose and covered eyes bothered me a bit.

It's kind of like that with everyone. I laugh at jokes about Koreans having hot tempers and fighting all the time and Irish people being the same (I'm half korean, half white), but when people make a nasty joke all hell breaks loose.
I kind of like their little eyes too.
@coolcat10189:
Hidekazu probably just thought he was being cute. Granted, he doesn't slap on really offensive stereotypes to the European countries or America. It seems that only China (being portrayed as illiterate and uneducated) and Korea got the bad rap. And it's true, Americans don't know a lot of the bad that was done such as in the Phillipines, Hawaiian Islands and other pacific islands.
I guess because I don't live in the U.S. I don't see it as being offensive really, but then again I don't know all the stereotypes that are associated with Mexicans.
