Can't say I've watched the anime ever since the second or third movie came out? The one people would line up for in order to get an exclusive card...a card that is probably burried somewhere in a box in my house =/ I liked it though, it was pretty light-hearted and had some good entertainment value for a kids' show.

I agree with the battle system aspects.
Do you know how « Snuggly Bunny » terrible it is trying to play R/B/Y and G/S/C after I've played Platinum? Highly overpowered pokemon, slow as hell and obnoxious traveling, and a terrible battle system overall make it a pain in the « Mr.Gourmet's hat ».
I like pokemon more as it goes on, because the battle dynamics become more finely toned and they fix problems every generation.

First I want to say I feel that because Game Freak is running out of ideas the Pokemon they create are getting better, because they now have to think about how to draw these critters. Heck, I'd argue Generation 1 had the worst designs. There are a « Soft and Fluffy » of Generation 1 Pokemon that were created with a stick a new body part on it mentality. Granted, there are still Pokemon like that, but they are less and less.
Second, I want to say that the anime has always been awful. It has gotten worse over time, given, but it wasn't good to begin with. The show had always been a lame cash in for the games, and the only real reason we think it was good at one point it because we have nostalgia for it, like the whole Generation 1 vs. every-other-generation-of-starters thing.
That's my two cents.

Plus it might be due to the limited graphics, but some of the rby pokemon are pretty QUALITY-packed

Hey, I still enjoy watching the old episodes of Pokemon, when they are on TV. Is it high entertainment? Hell no. But it's still pretty fun to watch or have on in the background, more for the camp aspect than an "OMG THIS IS AWESOME POCKET MONSTERS" thing. I love Team Rocket. The new episodes just aren't as funny.
Honestly, I love the anime. I think it's fine. Is it better than the original? No. But whatever is? Nostalgia is always a key part in our view towards things.
However, I don't like the Kanto and/or Johto series that much, due to Misty. Hoenn wasn't that great either, because I wasn't too fond of May. But at least she wasn't an entire « Baaaa *glomp* » case like Misty. Although, Misty can be nice and is pretty cool by herself, Ash brings out the total « Baaaa *glomp* » in her and vice versa. May never really seemed to care about Ash. Which was fine, but boring. I love Dawn. She's girly, but she has a good amount of knowing when to hit Ash when he acts stupid, while not being a total « Baaaa *glomp* » like Misty was. And she doesn't completely ignore Ash either. I like that. I'm going to really miss her when she leaves. </3

But honestly, it's not like he didn't have much of a choice. He had an injured/sick pokemon on his hands and was a total newbie of a trainer. Besides, Misty would often hit/abuse Ash regularly for so little things that it just got old fast.
Some of the official art was pretty bad too. There was a thread on /v/ about it where someone posted all the prerelease pics of all 150 pokemon, and they didn't look a lot like their hgss counterparts. xD; I have one or two of the pics on my compy, I'll look for them :3
And you can tell from the pics that psyduck was supposed to be the "mascot" pokemon instead of Pikachu.
