So... I'm a new harvest moon player and i was wondering how you are supposed to take care of them?
Do i just leave them inside the barns and what not and treat them as prisoners?

Yeah, the search usually isn't the best thing to use...

You could let them outside. If it's a nice day, then you don't have to waste some fodder, and put them outside in the grass.

Actually, you do need to let them outside in Grand Bazaar or they will get sick and eventually die (assuming you don't give them medicine, but it'd be a lot cheaper to just let them outside). This is why they changed the way cats and dogs work. Cats will let the chickens out and bring them back in, and dogs will let the cows and sheep out and back in.

Oh.. So i need to plant Grass? Should i keep them fenced in somewhere? Or do they automatically go back with cats/dogs? D:

Well, you can't get cats or dogs until you have four of the animal that's associated with them. Chickens go in a pen, but there's a pasture on a hill behind your house. Just push your sheep/cows out and they'll head there. Pick the chickens up and throw them in the pen outside (it's right by the barn exit). You don't need grass (the pasture doesn't have any planting spots), but you do need fodder.

Edit: The pets are also expensive, by the way.
