Does it require that both people have the game, or just one? And is it just local multiplayer or can you farm with friends on an internet connection too?

You can connect only with someone that has the game.

I'm pretty sure that it is local and worldwide/internet/wifi connection. (I think) /shot

I THINK it is worldwide. Like in pokemon and animal crossing where you have to have friend codes.
