A date in this game isn't a whole lot. You pick a place to go and you two talk. The dialogue (I think) varies if the person likes the place you went to or not.

Mm, basically it's like a short heart event. Unlike heart events, you don't get to answer a question, but they'll have varying dialogue depending on where you chose to have the date (they'll give you 3 options, which depend on the day of the week you ask them). To go on a date, all you have to do is talk to them twice or more (make sure your hands are free) on one of the days of the week they'll date on. They'll usually talk about themselves or their hobbies, or other villagers or the place you're having your date at. It's kind of nice, since you can find out something new about these things sometimes, and it makes the whole bachelor(ette) system more fun.

These are just things I've heard others say, and I haven't confirmed it myself just yet, but I've also heard that dating increases the bachelor(ette)'s heart points; also, if one is at an orange/pink/red flower (apologies, I forget which) they'll get jealous if you date others. If you get someone jealous, they won't talk to you and won't accept gifts, but you just have to apologize and s'all good. You can still go on dates with your husband/wife when you get married too, which is sweet. o3o

Yep, heart events are still here (well, flower events now o3o ); the only difference is that to activate one, you have to ask them on a date at the right time. Rhea's thread should have all the info on those. Other than that, the heart events are the same as always.
