Animal Feeding Question

So I just purchased my first cow and a few chickens. I know that you can look on the blackboard in your shed to check if the animals have eaten, but this is where I'm a tad confused. If there's a thought bubble with what looks like a can of food, does that mean my animal has eaten or hasn't?? :c I don't want to put them in before they've eaten, or waste fodder because they already have. Thanks in advance!

they r hungry and i accidently threw out out food of my chick and it still hasnt eaten all of the food yet (its been 3 ingame days...2 were rainy) so the food lasts awhile before you have to give them more it seems ^^
