Yup, cats. You need at least 4 chickens to unlock cats at Enrique's shop. Although they will only take one chicken out at a time when you first get one. To get them to take more, you need to train them with the cat bell which can be bought from Felix after you've boughten the brush and bell from him.

I have the same experience on my pets as you do. I absolutely agree that the first thing to do is to stock up medicines in case of emergency. It would be the best resort actually.

Your cats don't bring chickens in and out when it's snowing, I believe, even though your dogs still herd the sheep and cows. Since you're in early Spring, I think it's safe to assume that it's a definite possibility that that's what happened.
Just take the chickens out yourself if it's snowing.

This is correct. Snowing counts as rain, in that the cats don't like to get wet. Since animals don't get sick from snow, and dogs have no aversion to water, they take the livestock out when it snows.
