Yup, cats. You need at least 4 chickens to unlock cats at Enrique's shop. Although they will only take one chicken out at a time when you first get one. I have the same experience on my pets as you do. I absolutely agree that the first thing to do is to stock up medicines in case of emergency. This is correct. Snowing counts as rain, in that the cats don't like to get wet.
