idk. i almost feel like I have worst luck with the wonder rod and I catch all the same cheap fish even by spending most of my (IG) day fishing. With the normal rod i was catching fish that sold for as much as 400 but the wonder rod catches at the most fish that sell for 180...

I just catch them with hands. I don't use the rod at all because catching fishies with hands is much more comfortable and takes less time than fishing with the rod. I don't remember well but I think that you can get two rods in this game. Both are from requests.
I think there are certain cookable fish that you can only catch with the Wonder Rod. Plus, you'll need it if you want to have any hope of winning the fishing contest.
I dunno, I seem to have decent luck with it. I typically don't fish for profit, though.
Also, the Wonder Rod helps you catch (I think) three Wonderfuls as well. (Someone can correct me on this if they like. I know the Wonder Rod helps on getting some of the Wonderfuls that need to be fished up).
