Well, I've been playing the game for a while now and what I like to do is collect.
In each season "grasses" and "flowers" come out all over the island. What I do is that on the 15th and last day of the season I go around and I collect them. (In the Winter nothing grows, so try going fishing instead. Also, if you have the forest, you can go mining or to the top of the mountain to get White Grasses.) It can be tedious, but it sure rakes in the Gs.
Another thing is farming. Of course. But at first, try to do each seed that Chen gives you. Don't overdo it in the beginning because then you faint a lot from trying to water them all. Turnips are easy in the Spring. Also chickens and cows help. (You need the barns and Vaughn first.)
