I'd recommend the Wii HMs, ToT and AP. I personally find them more entertaining than some of the newer HMs on DS, especially the characters. The only downside is the long loading time in ToT.. and maybe the LONG days in AP, but if you don't mind them so much they're great games.
And yeah, you should also try Rune Factory. It's a great series.
The first game might be a little boring after a while, but still enjoyable. 2 is quite fun, and 3 & Frontier are awesome. The girls, especially in RF3 and Frontier, all have great personalities.
Twin Villages is quite good too, aside from the upgrading. You can't upgrade your house / farm whenever you want since you have to wait for the carpenters' requests first. Usually once a month. Cooking contests might feel repetitive after a while, but if you like cooking then it's fun.
The glitches in DS/Cute kinda killed the fun for me. D:
