You don't unlock them until you've earned at least 20,000 crop degree points. They're yams in this game, not sweet potatoes.

* S-Rank max 600 G to ship

Note: Yams are incredibly sensitive to water. There is always a risk of Fall rainstorms killing your plants. Be mindful of the weather and always check with Taro for the latest forecast. For example, if your Yam just grew to Sprout 1 and Taro tells you that it is going to rain tomorrow, then don't water your Yam; the rain it gets the next day will be plenty.
