I'm trying to get the fishing rod but everytime I try to give him an item he says "Don't worry about me" or something like that. Ive tried giving him Blue Grass, Indigo Grass, Purple Grass. Turnips, Lumber and Stone Materials, all items the guide says he likes. Can anybody tell me where I'm going wrong?

Hmm... That's odd, he accepted all my gifts with no problem. Maybe try chatting with him first, and then trying to give him a gift?

You must become friendly with the person you are trying to give a gift to. This requires you to talk to the person for about 3 days. During those 3 days do not try to give them a gift! You'll find that the warm-up seems to "reset" if you try to give the person a gift and they're not interested in receiving it.
Basically talk to the person for a few days before even thinking about giving them a gift.
If you didnt do this, then that is probably what is wrong. From the sound of it you are near the start so that would make sense.

Maybe your game is glitched, then? Reread through all the info and make sure you're doing exactly what it says. Maybe you missed something you don't realize you're doing wrong?

Do you keep trying to give him gifts? Because if you do that, the time it takes for him to accept gifts restarts. Try talking to him without even showing him a gift for about a week and see if that works. Otherwise he is being difficult.

You need to talk to a person 2 or 3 days straight and then on the 3 or 4th day you can start giving gifts. If this still does not work, I would try talking to him every day and still try to give gifts.
If it still does not work, then I think it's a glitch.
Hope this helps!

Maybe you annoyed him? You can only give people one gift per day, I dunno if you tried giving him multiple? It's really odd, it seems to have worked for the rest of us. You might have to restart your game, or just live without a fishing pole.

As in many other Harvest Moon games, it is interaction with characters that is
Giving a Main Character a gift he/she particularly likes will
boost heart levels further, but you must speak to individuals regularly or
they will refuse your gifts! When you fail to speak to an individual for two
days in a row, the individual will refuse even a Most Favourite Item the next
time you offer a Gift. The number of days that a character will continue to
refuse the gift is linked to the number of days you ignored him/her up to 5
days. 5 Days is the maximum number of days you will need to speak to any Main
Character who has refused a gift before he/she will begin to accept them again.

emily w is right. For now keep talking to him because even that will raise his heart level.

Agreed, without it you can't get Denny, Lanna or any of the Angler sub-villagers.
And without Denny and Lanna, you can't marry anyone because you won't have all the main characters.
